Thanks very much for the reply. I believe the HD660S2 come with a 4.4mm balanced cable, so I’d be good to go. I know the BTR7 might not be perfect for these headphones, but the idea would be to get a desktop device at some point.

These have been varying in price a lot on Amazon, In the last couple of weeks they’ve been as high as £499, but today they are £379, which is as low as I’ve seen them.

I think if you switch battery protection on, it only takes effect on the next reboot. However, even then I don’t think it’s completely reliable.

I’m pretty sure the Apple dongle has an amp built in.

I know humans are meant to be able to hear up to 20kHz, but as we get older, this number goes down. Unless you’re quite young, I think a maximum of 14-15kHz is quite normal.

Could it be impedance related? The output impedance of the phone might not be ideal for the headphones in question, but might be ideal for the headphone amplifier input. Then, the output impedance of the amplifier might be a better match for the headphones, giving a genuinely better sound.
