Quote: re dinner: is there a place in the hotel that can do a group thing for us? that'll certainly be the most convenient option! there are at least 2, maybe more, nearby diners, although i don't have their names or phone #s (if we wanna do that it's good to call them and give them...- Barbarous

Tube headphone amp kit for $25!?
No, but I worried about it, as the lines to the switch and back are physically near the signal lines. I would reroute them if I needed to, but so far I don't hear a need.- Barbarous

Tube headphone amp kit for $25!?
I followed sunneebear's example and made a balanced amp out of these little guys. Probably for the same reason-- I have a Matrix mini i DAC, and wanted to see what a balanced amp was like, without shelling out hundreds for amp and cables. And it does sound great-- at the moment I'm just...- Barbarous

post your grado mods....
Quote: Thanks! MDR-V200. The circle frames are the right size, but I did have to dremel down the pins to fit in the holes in the sides of the Grado cups.- Barbarous

You can find it! It's a JMoney headband. He used to sell through eBay, and had a website; I haven't checked either recently, but I noticed Headroom is carrying his stuff now too.- Barbarous

I used RIT for the pads on the collapsible mod. I took them out after what seemed like a long time, an hour or so, rinsed them, and they were not yet perfectly black. So I threw them back in, weighed them down, and left them in a very long time-- maybe not overnight, but hours and hours-- and...- Barbarous

Quote: Thanks! That's a Switchcraft jack. I bought that cable; would have made it but the Fraggler was selling what I wanted for what the cable would have cost to make. I did make the cables in the middle mod. The wood cups in the first mod were made by pendles, the spacers in...- Barbarous

post your grado mods....
I've done a few Grado mods so I thought I'd add a post. The first was to a SR-125. I bought the cups from someone on Head-Fi, used a JMoney headband and wooden tips, the big earpads, and the Dynamat mod. I found the wooden cups had a really positive impact on the sound; they...- Barbarous

Firestone Mass Preamplifier
I picked up a new product I like, that some of you might be interested in too. I work at home and my desktop system has become my main system. Over the last couple years I've whittled down my sources to just a few. Ninety per cent of the time I use iTunes on my Mac, though I still play CDs...- Barbarous

The Apple diyMod: My Take on the Famous iMod [56k killer] Featuring 3G, 4G, 5G and nano 1G!
Joneeboi you might want to put that new link on your first post. Until I saw this I thought the old site had just disappeared. Glad to see it is still up-- I'm about to try modding some old iPods that need new batteries-- as long as I'm in there anyway. [Sorry, when I clicked the link the...- Barbarous

iPod Dock for Cheap Music Source? Advice needed!
I have one and it bites. The Pro-Ject's circuitry degrades the line out signal (as compared with several plain jane line out docks I have made to go with portable amps). ALO Audio has a similar product-- a dock with line-out-- pricey for what it is but I wish I had bought one instead of the...- Barbarous

Newb power supply questions
Thanks very much for your answers! I found the 9-pin D connector at RadioShack. I am going to do an adaptor first just to confirm the amp is working, then can decide where to go from there, but long term a panel-mounted connector to match the Headroom one makes sense. I'm going to watch the...- Barbarous

Newb power supply questions
I bought a Hart Chiarra amp on eBay inexpensively. It needs a power supply, not just an IEC, which I hadn't realized. It takes a + or - 15 V supply. Hart sold a kit for the PS too but they seem to be out of business now. I noticed an APS Headroom wallwart I have is + or - 15 V. I thought I...- Barbarous

Bookshelf Speakers
I've used the thin strips of veneer to cover exposed plywood before and those are suprisingly easy to use. I've never tried sheets. Probably a bit harder. I bookmarked this piano black finish page a while ago, if it helps. I haven't tried it myself yet. Hopefully this weekend I will...- Barbarous
