Mr. Speakers Ether Flow Impressions and Discussion

I didn't, and wouldn't, say "way better". Biggest difference to my ears is the stunning clarity of the Utopias. Ether Flow can't match that.

Other than that I think it is more about "different" than "better" - the Flow is more laid back, the Utopia more direct and in your face. Pick your poison (and budget).

I think too much is made of the Utopia sound stage. It isn't huge, but is very precise. Frankly, about the last thing I notice when listening to music. YMMV.
:thumbsup_tone1: Pretty much correct. The Utopia does define its own voice in a "reference" format. Nothing in it attacks the music or your ear for nearly everyone that listens to it. The Ether Flow is a great headphone and again has a very wide range of owners & enthusiasts. It would be my opinion that FLOW is very well rounded and linear keeping with the great voicing Dan Clark has selected for his brand. Dans done a fantastic job of creating a newer performance gen of the Ether series with the Flow. I'd say the Ether Flow is warm, musical, well and realistically imaged. I like that it has easy and appropriate pad tuning available. I like that it comes with a great cable. In fact, I'll go so far as to say his supplied cable is often better than some aftermarket cables being offered out there at 3-5 times the price of his cable if bought separately. No doubt the Utopia rocks and the HD800&S are great headphones too but the Ether FLOW and Closed are remarkable for the price, design, build quality, sound quality, genre bandwidth, weight/comfort, pride of ownership and musicality. The FLOW product in my opinion exceeds my expectations on these points.

I just ordered some Ether Flows, and I'm still using an Asgard2/Bifrost.  I want to get a Mjo2/Gumby, but I'm not feeling losing my pre-amp function where I remove the headphones and it goes right to my powered speakers.  Anyone have an alternate amp suggestion that has this function for about the same price, give or take? Or possibly recommend a solution using Mjo2?

I don't hear the Flow as "brighter" than the original. To my ears, it resolves better, can offer more detail but it doesn't need to be "brighter" to accomplish that. I would say that it's probably more neutral than the original and more transparent. Some headphones use extended treble to offer more sense of detail, Ether Flow doesn't. It is just able to offer more detail based on the design. If forget where I heard this:

"Ether Flow doesn't do anything to the sound. Music just seems to breath from it."

I never listened to the pre-Flow open-backed Ether, but I did purchase the pre-Flow C and returned it because I didn't like its sound signature at all... hated it, actually. Jump ahead to the open-backed Ether Flow, which I purchased recently. What those Cs were lacking in warmth, balance, and overall excitement, these have to the hilt. Simply masterful. The best word I can come up to describe them is transportive, in that they don't draw attention to themselves so much as let the music take you.

Just received my Flows today - and they are all that people say.  They are so quick! The Bass is tight - and they definitely bring it when the music does.  The highs are not sibilant. The mids are not recessed for a pair of cans I've heard described as V shaped. I'm so happy with this purchase.  Thanks Dan! Nailed it. This is the only pair of headphones I need for music listening...I'm so happy the hunt is over. This was getting expensive. Now to choose and amp/dac pairing.  This Asgard2/Bifrost is gonna get an upgrade.

Can anyone compare ether flow and t1 2nd gen?

I recently bought t1 2gen and I thought it does everything right but bass(just not punchy as grado does)

Does ether flow have more bass quantity than t1 2gen?

I've read this whole thread...and every other HEK / Utopia LCD etc thread I could find....I'm coming out of posting retirement to ask:
I own the K1000 (great soundstage and detail...lacks bass slam)  the HD580/600  & the D7000  (among many other things including a 400i I like quite a bit)

What I'd like:  I listen to lots of different things... but I want this song to sound like a mix of the bass slam/foundation of the D7000 and the detailed clarity of the HD580

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTTUtH8XpU8&html5=1

(Of course this is an MP3 version...but you get the idea of an electronic song with both deep bass and detail)

I'm playing the flac through Decibel to a Herus.

If you A/B this (it's electronic music) you'll hear lots of microdetail and background 'sounds' ... squeaks and echos and scratchy machine sounds (as well as the sound of the vinyl being played...it's from  a live DJ set) on the HD580 ... and it'll sound like I would like it to sound...I almost think the bass is up to snuff. The ...  Then when I switch to the D7000, the little details are lost, but the bass is so wonderfully alive.  (I can't "C" the A/B comparison with the K1000 because the Herus doesn't have the Cojones for it.)

Bottom line:  I'm trying to figure out if there is a compromise to be had.... a phone that has BOTH the audible detail and the bass slam.  I know that's what the majority of the people here are looking for too.   Is the Ether Flow that combination?  Is the HEK?   Should I just stretch the Denons over the Senns in a piggyback and call it a day?
