Lake People HPA RS 02 / HPA RS 08 thread

The amp will absolutely benefit from a better DAC. I would maybe look into DACs that are known to be a bit bassier, maybe something 4490 based. However, the RS02/08 were designed to be very neutral for studio monitoring so maybe this isn't a sound you are looking for. A tube buffer such as the iFi iTube 2 could improve most of the "flaws" you are describing but maybe a less neutral amp is closer to your preferences.

I'm loving my RS 08. It might be the best sub $1K SS amp I have heard. Yes, it is very neutral but that is exactly what I was looking for. Couldn't be happier.
What dac do you use if you use one?
And do you happen to know dacs known for there wide soundstage/spaceious sound? As i find it a bit lacking compared to the x-can. I am whatching alot of movies and tv series with headphones. So a warm dac with wide soundstage would be ideal for me.

I use a Schiit Modi Multibit. I happen to think the Schiit Multibit DACs are the best you can get under $1k. I also happen to think that most decent DACs have pretty similar sound stages.

I figured out that I needed line out so I can use my headphone amp as a preamp, so I'm taking advantage of Thomann's 30 day return and changing out my 28 day old G109-P with the HPA RS 02.

Will report back on any sound differences if any are noticed. Should receive the RS 02 in a few days.

On rs 02 i prefer having the gain switches at -12 even with 300 ohm headphones like hd 650 to be able to find the sweet spot in volume easier. Was a bit hard with the other gain settings i thought, even with - 12 i dont think its perfect volume control.

Got the RS 02 today. Can't tell any difference in sound, but the line out with settings is very useful. Other than that, the relay in this makes a click, but there was no relay click in the G109-P.

I'm having no volume control issues.

The RS02 is basically the G109 + preouts. I'd just return it for either an RS08 or V280 instead.

Yeah, I'll just return it and get something that's twice as expensive. Thanks for the input.

I didn't exchange my G109-P for a sound upgrade, but rather for the added option of a line out. I expected them to sound quite similar, which they do.

I have to take back what i wrote. Just discovered you can have the volume knob placed anywhere between the steps also, before i thought it was just in steps. Now i guess gain at 0 will work again. Also it was mostly for movie whatching i dident find a sweet spot as easy as with my x-can 3, not with music.

Since I couldn't find any photographs of the internals of a RS 02, I opened mine up and took some.

If all you need is a preamp, there's the schiit SYS or an Emotiva Control freak, which are dirt cheap compared to an RS02.

I already had a G109-P. The price difference between the G109-P and the RS 02 is less than what a Schiit SYS costs. So I took advantage of Thomann's free return and exchanged the G109-P for the RS 02 instead of spending even more on a separate component. I don't see what the problem is.

Hello,

I read so many reviews, but I don’t know what’s best for me. I want to buy a Lake People or Violectric combo for around 1000€.
I already own the SpeaKa Dac which is equal to the Dragonfly.
So I habe 3 options:
- Rs 02 with 06
- Violectric V200 witch SpeaKa Dac
- RS 08 with SpeaKa dac

So the 02/08 are very neutral and reviews say, that the 06 gives a bit more body to them.
The V200 is a bit on the warm side and my dragonfly Dac gives more energy to the highs.
So to me both combinations seems to be very comparable?
