well, I think my N6 is broken somehow, my unit keeps shutting down every time I plug the HO.

I expect this DAP would last for a few years, too bad this isn't the case
reset it and charge

From what I observed, there is a good possibility that a re-calibration of battery gauge should solve the problem. While Lithium battery installed in N6 does not have memory effect, it does has what we called inaccurate gauge issue, this might introduced all sorts of funny power-related problems. I suggest you do a gauge calibration before you consider this is a hardware problem. In fact this is something that we all should be doing occasionally. I normally do this after 15-20 charging cycle (2 times 50% charging is count as one cycle) An inaccurate gauge can lead to the fact that the the battery capacity values are are wrong. The battery may report that it still has reasonable capacity when in fact it has a much lower value, and this causes the computer to shutdown unexpectedly. You can google the terms "Calibrate Gauge" on Lithium Battery.

To calibrate the gauge of a lithium battery, you simply need to do a full discharge followed by a full charge, so this is what I advice:

(1) turn on the LED screen to maximum brightness and set the screen to "always on", keep it running until the player turn off itself.
(2) Charge the battery overnight, till you see 99% or 100% on the meter
(3) Set the screen to minimum brightness and 30sec duration only, set it to playback on any CD quality files (Wav or FLAC) continuously til the player power off again. Keep the screen off and check the battery reading every hour, and drop down the battery readings for record.

Don't worry, two years ago we were a bit conservative on third party accessories, that's a standard micro USB cable, you can go ahead and substitute it with any standard micro USB cable to charge or access to 8GB internal memory.

Thank you Andykong for your fast answer

I should have mentioned my question was about using it as external dac from my computer

In that case, standard micro USB cable should work, but a cable with better shielding will be more reliable and quiet, I suggest you just use whatever you have on hand to get it works first, and it should work. :D

Does anyone know if additional drivers are needed to work in the DAC mode under the Mac OS?

Nope, iOS should have USB Audio Class 2 driver pre-installed, you don't need a special device driver to get it works.

What firmware for most warm sound ? And where do i get that firmware?

You can download the firmware of N6 from the following page:

N6 has maintain its sound signature across the firmware, we have achieved certain degree of refinements through firmware upgrades, but we didn't change the sound signature.

Hi Andykong
Could you tell us what are the difference between N6 and idac 6 when used as desktop dac please (in term of sound)
Thanks
Thomas

iDAC-6 can handle upto DSD128 and PCM 32Bit/384kHz, the N6 is only good for DSD64 and PCM 24Bit/192kHz.

The iDAC-6 has a tube buffer, and together with the five digital filters built-in, it offers a very versatile sound signature and can match well with a long list of headphone. The N6 offers reference sound but it is not as versatile as the iDAC-6

In terms of absolute sound quality, while N6 offers bangs of the buck, the iDAC-6 is still superior in desktop environment.
