Aune M1s Impressions & Discussion Thread (Aune's newest hi-res DAP with ESS9018KM + 2.5mm Balanced Out)

i'll believe you, but my m1s works well with a 128 gig formatted in ExFat. The only problems with those old fashioned file systems are long file- and folder names. Wish those gadgets could read and write hfs+ or ntfs ....

Yes, I noticed this too after formatting with the 64KB allocation size.  Previously, the same songs displayed their full titles, but now there are truncated.

Hopefully Aune will resolve this in the future updates too.

128gb exfat for me, it's all fine 90%of the time except dirty cut off at the end of flac (noticeable only on some records who has no silence between tracks) and glitch on most of my dsf audio records: some just a bit, some unlistenable. thank god Thriller by M.Jackson is flawless.

By dirty cut off i mean as if if you pull out a jack very quickly. The sound stop and start again for a fraction of time before stopping completely.

It does not happen with mp3. The gap between tracks is clean cut.

For me, I noticed a slight pop sound at the end of tracks, regardless of whether mp3 or flac.  It is like the popping sound some DAC/Amp gives when they are switched on or off.  This is noticeable at high gain with my more sensitive IEMs.

Is this normal?

It's a known issue that came up after they fixed the cutoff at being of tracks. It will be shorted soon I'm guessing.

Here is an example for a cue sheet format that works everytime.
A single flac files time stamped with the cue file

How did you get that cue sheet that works? I cannot get them to work.

I hate CUE sheets. Not kidding. Absolutely hate having to deal with them. I'm pretty sure I understand the necessity with M1s, and SQ is good enough at the price point to overlook it to a certain degree, but I'm hoping Aune can find a path forward that doesn't include CUE sheet requirement for gapless.

@SofaSamuraiX please check in the spoiler to see the cue sheet layout and compare it with the one you have.

Mine is different for sure. I ripped with EAC. Not sure why it says WAV instead of FLAC....

Oh yeah I just taught of it after watching a few Aune M1s video reivew, is it possible that Aune make reading song tag a reality........that will be great though instead of just seeing numbers on some track that I have.

I've heard both (and many other DAPs), and imho the answer isn't so simple despite the many claims of DAP A has better SQ vs DAP B that are constantly being made in headfi and other forms. I think a better way to approach this is to let us know what type of sound signature you're after, and then we can provide guidance.

I'd also strongly suggest you don't just take SQ into account. You're buying something you'll be using frequently, so making sure other features such as GUI, ergonomics, connectivity, etc. meet your needs is very important in the decision making process in my opinion.

As an example, I'm one of the people who prefer to listen to N3 vs X5 v3. I found N3 to have better dynamics, soundstage, imaging, etc. Others prefer X5 v3. Are either of us wrong? Nope, we just have different tastes. I'm guessing they prefer a smoother, more intimate sound. And I'm not going to claim that N3 has better SQ vs X5 v3, either. But if somebody tells me what they're after, I can provide some guidance.

Another thing to consider is that sound can change with these DAPs depending on fw version. For instance, when I first got a sample N3 I felt it was too warm but a fw release came which provides much more neutral tuning. Similar thing happened with M1s with the last fw update, which made single ended output sound more open to me. So, that aren't static devices. They're in development to a certain extent until the developers obsolete them.

Hope that makes sense to you even if it wasn't the more black and white answer you wanted.

How do you like the M1s over the N3.

@Dark Helmet - M1s vs N3, eh...

Well, first off, they're quite different. I look at M1s as a "purist" DAP. Not so far as something like TJ's Revamp Audio DAPs, but definitely moreso than something like N3 that takes more of a "Swiss Army Knife" approach.

So if it's features you're after, then N3 makes more sense. It's smaller, has better gapless support, and has a bucket load of choices when it comes to connectivity. Sound quality is pretty good. Alex likened it to the Cayin i5 but with slightly more compressed soundstage. I hear a bit more difference, with i5 also beating N3 when it comes to dynamics. But they are to tonally similar, with a slightly warmed-up reference type sound.

I think I've already expressed my thoughts on the M1s pretty well, but to summarize... After the recent update to the latest testing firmware, I'm really enjoying the single-ended output whereas before I felt it was just OK. Balanced out has always been a strong point with superb sound quality. Now, I feel like they're much closer than before, with more analytical sound that isn't overly bright and has good dynamics and separation. I'm super happy the split-second cut-off at the beginning of songs has been taken care of, but I'm still not satisfied with gapless handling. CUE files are kludgy, and I'd rather not deal with them.

Does that help?

Meeh actually my cue files is partially working. it's fine if i start from the first track and foward to a couple of tracks later more or less, but if i want to play one track in the middle or forward straight to the last track, the player simply refuse to play. I always have bugs, and different one depending of the cue files :s seems like it will take some times to fix it all
