Budget closed circumaural choice for rock and metal

Budget is $50-100 Priorities: 1) comfort, 2) sound quality, 3) easy to drive with an iPhone/iPad Music styles: 1) Progressive metal (Rush to Opeth), 2) thrash/speed metal (Big Four to Lamb of God), 3) experimental (Melt Banana to Alcests). I do enjoy some good old fashioned Black Metal...

Build the ultimate mid-fi rig for the budding audiophile

I've read a ton of threads asking for advice on a headphone or a setup and the recommendations, while good, can be a little random. So how about a specific set of criteria which I think would satisfy the majority of requests. Please be specific with your recommendations. The idea here is instead...

    DT770 80ohm vs 32ohm

Can anyone directly compare the bass in the 80 vs the 32 edition of these phones? Mainly without an amp. I tried the 80 and the bass just wasn't there for me. Mind you the 80's had velour pads and most 32's have pleather.

    Mid range closed can recommendations

Let me start by saying I like the sound signature oh my HD 428's (Sennheiser). The only thing I don't care for is the cheap plasticy feeling they have. I'd like to get a pair of cans that feel....more substantial. I'd prefer for them to have the same sort of sound signature as the 428's, prefer...

    Another HD 428 review

Strictly for the people standing in Best Buy trying to decide.... Yesterday I was out and about and ended up in my local Best Buy. I've been itching for a new set of earphones to replace/supplement my IEM's. I had talked myself into a set of DNA's but decided to listen to everything there...

    IEM recommendation with a twist

Hi guys. I am in need of a good IEM on a $50 - 100 budget. I mainly listen to Progressive Rock/Metal (Rush, Opeth), Jazz (Winton Marsalis, Miles Davis) and Classical. I am currently using JVC Marshmellows for IEM's. Output is only from a 4th gen iPhone (no amp). Here's the catch, I am currently...

    Change or modify D1001 pads?

So I got a new set of Denon D1001's, and they sound fantastic. Only one problem I have right away, they hurt my ears after a while. Seems the pads just aren't thick enough for my ears. Are there any off the shelf pads that fit that are a little thicker? Or is this DIY territory?

    Slacker G2 portable

Anybody tried one of these yet? Amazon.com: Slacker G2 8 GB 40-Station Personal Radio Player: Electronics 8 gb of storage is equal to my nano. More than enough music for me. I have last.fm now, and I like it. Slacker seems to be along the same lines. Updates via wi-fi. Most reviews I've...

    Recommend <$200 phones for metal

I'm looking for a set of phones to replace my Bose over the ear phones. I mainly listen to metal (Opeth, In Flames, Kyuss), prog rock (Rush, Porcupine Tree, Anathema), some acoustic guitar stuff (Dead, DMB), and occasionally some jazz (Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck). I have a newer Macbook and an...

First review - Sleek Audio SA-6

I'd like to try a review. My first in fact. So a little background about my listening habits and gear I've used. Background: I've always considered myself a music-phile, but not quite an audiophile. After doing some reading/lurking on these forums for a while, I started collecting a little...

    Question about <$100 IEM's

Hi all. New to posting on the site, although I have lurked for quite a while. I'm in the market for new IEM's around $100. I have read all of the comparisons (i.e. 17 IEM's reviewed etc), and I've narrowed it down to a few choices. Now I need some expert advice. My choices right now are 1) AL...
