    Options for replacing IEM cables

Hi guys, perhaps someone here can help me with the cables on two of my IEMs.   The first is an Audio Technica CK9. There seems to be a short in the cable, about three inches below the point where it enters the right earpiece. For a while, if I bent it just right, I could still get sound, but...

Enigma - Love Sensuality Devotion: Awesome Music, Awesome Recording

I own the first three albums, and the Return to Innocence and Eyes of Truth singles. There's a remix of Return to Innocence on the single that is absolutely stunning. I think it's the "Long and alive" mix, but I can't remember for sure, and I don't have the CD in front of me. It's 10x better...

What were the greatest speakers you've ever heard?

Thiel CS 3.6, via CAL CDP, and Krell amping. Modestly priced compared to some named here, but they simply oozed emotion. Music played through them touched my heart in a way that no other speaker I've heard could. Their organic sound was pure, jawdropping magic. I literally cried while a...

    Restoring old speakers

Is it possible to repair or restore marred vinyl finish on older speakers? I know that it's easy to fix rotted foam surrounds, but what about cosmetic damage like this? I think it wouldn't be hard to buff up real wood, but vinyl? It could be tricky. Anybody have any experience with this? Maybe...

    Suggest some new age music.

I like: Enya, Deep Forest (the Pygmy one only,) Ceredwen, I Ching, Coyote Oldman, Mike Oldfield (Songs of Distant Earth only,) and David Arkenstone and his side project Troika. I like real instruments, as opposed to more electronic stuff like Tangerine Dream (though I like some TD stuff, it's...

You guys better be right about the KSC-35's

On a more serious note, I like my KSC-35s - a lot. They're the only headphone I still own today. I've gone through the Senn HD580, Sony V6 and CD1700 and EX70 and E888, and Grado SR325, and none of them *got* me the way the humble little KSC-35 did. On some level I know they sound worse than...

    Rediscovering The Wall

The Wall got me onto Pink Floyd when I was in high school, about seven years back (how many people discovered Pink Floyd in high school? ahhh, the age of rebellion ) It's wonderful on many levels, and phenomenal technically - but I think DSOTM/WYWH/Animals (in order of preference) are all...

Two Towers Review: "Laborious" (BIG SPOILERS!!)

Now for some thoughts on the characters: First, the ents. I thought they looked good, but the movie cheapened them. They had to be tricked into fighting and Treebeard seemed slow-witted and insufficiently wise. Second, Faramir. He was the weakest part of the film. I don't see any reason he...

Two Towers Review: "Laborious" (BIG SPOILERS!!)

Wooo, where to begin. I could write a mighty thesis on this Gonna make a multi-part reply. Shivohum: Quote: Second, Gandalf hardly uses any of his powers. Why not? Isn't he an arch-wizard? If Jackson is going to show the battle, he should show Gandalf as doing a little more than what...

Lord of the Rings - Two Towers

I'm seeing it TWICE on opening day! Once at 12:30 pm with a couple of co-workers (we're taking the day off.) Once at 8:30 pm with a gaggle of friends. Sad but true... I am the king of all fanboys. I grew up on the books (I've read the Hobbit, the trilogy, and the Silmarillion at...

Looking for a headphone with these properties.

danieln: I had, and didn't care for, the HD580. I thought it lacked energy and kick. I kept wanting to raise the volume, to feel the sound in my gut, but even ear-blasting levels didn't "pull me in". I think the HD600 will be too polite, too reserved, and not visceral enough. I don't have the...

Who Goes To Church On Sunday:

I'm not a Christian, and I've only set foot in churches for a couple of weddings. Even if I was a believer, I doubt I'd have much use for organized religion. God is omniscient, right? Why not talk to him anywhere? What need for rituals, ceremonies, trappings? These seem like needless...

    How about these babys!

Actually, if you do some digging, it looks like the AHD-750 (and 950) are quite good. Not much said of them around here, but a search at Headwize should net some opinions. Apparently they're liquid-sounding and musical... probably a strong competitor in the <$100 range.

Looking for a headphone with these properties.

(Skip the first couple of paragraphs to reach the meat) I got a pair of KSC-35 some months ago. Something about the sound captivated me: it was lively, dextrous, impactful, out-of-head. Its energy was unmatched, in my experience. I wrote a bunch about it. For a time, I was on cloud 9...

    Sony MDR-CD1700 forever gone?

The CD1700 ain't all that. Highs are muffled, mids are warm and lush but lacking subtlety, and the bass is flabby. Have not heard with a really good amp, but I didn't like what they promised, and wouldn't expect them to improve much. I imagine you could find a used pair for $150-$175, but...

    Is all this worth it?

The V6 will isolate much better. In my opinion, however, they can't touch the KSC-35's sound. The Koss is fast, punchy, and engaging. The V6 is slow, lifeless, and sounds plasticky (instruments sound synthesized, voices are hollow.) The V6's highs are harsher than the KSC-35's. The V6s go...

    What is your headphone history.

I went about this all backward. I went through these (not in order): V700 (hey, I was an aspiring DJ!) 2x EX70 888 V6 CD1700 SR-80 SR-325 HD580 before settling on the KSC-35 as my one and only 'phone.

What are your "old favorite" headphones?

KSC-35. The only headphones I own, now I've owned - and gotten rid of - some much more expensive 'phones over the last 3 years. The KSC-35 is the only one that's never let me down. Perfect everywhere, or even anywhere? Nah. But it wins on intangibles.

    The Hot 100/stereophile's 40 Years
