    The Fiio X5 Thread

Just one last comment before I delete this thread from my bookmarks:   The comments I've read as replies to my last post regarding my pending RMA have suggested that user error was a potential factor.  I can say that it was not.  There are no drivers required for the OS X platform, so there is...

I've just had my RMA accepted, so my X5 is going back too.  I was willing to wait for firmware updates, and then I started to experience pops and clicks during USB DAC usage, and when playing certain tracks from µSD in DAP mode.  I decided enough was enough.   It's actually a massive relief...

Not once so far, and that accounts for several hours worth of playback.  OS X 10.8, USB2.0, VLC, DVD Player.app, Blu-Rays, DVDs and MP4s.  Using the micro-USB cable that came with my Nokia N8.

It helps that someone on this thread agrees with me, I was feeling a little alone on this.  Thank you for sharing your point of view.   I've decided to give the Fiio X5 the benefit of the doubt, and will not return it (though I can see myself swithering on this point daily until the firmware...

I didn't pay $350 for a product with a crowd-sourced, democratically-decided GUI.  I don't want some unqualified random on the street deciding how I get to use my device.  I paid $350 for what I thought was a mid-range DAP made by a company with trained software engineers that know what they're...

Done.   I accept I may not have looked too closely at the Bugzilla list before describing my issue here.  For that I apologise.  However, I think having Playlist creation above this issue in the User Interface bug list is still an odd and unwelcome state of affairs.  There are far, far more...

Hm, that's not in the PDF manual I downloaded from their site, though it may be in the paper guide they provided in the box.   Either way, that needs to be fixed, and fast.  What a strange design choice - why would you need two buttons providing the same function?  It's not as though I'm going...

I don't believe iTunes embeds art within files.  It adds them to an image folder on your computer, and just pulls them up as necessary.  I imagine album art shows up on iPods and iPhones because iTunes copies the appropriate files across during the sync.   I recommend XLD for adding art during...

Anyone found that the X5 wakes from sleep when it's in your pocket while listening to music?  I was listening to Johnny Cash and suddenly "25 minutes to go" went from "10 minutes to go" back to "19 minutes to go".  I pulled the X5 from my pocket and the screen was on, so obviously it'd been...

X5, FW 2.0.   Before I post this as a bug, can someone confirm the following is correct:   1) Play a song, any song, by navigating to it through Category mode.   2) Navigate back to the Main Menu by pressing the Back key repeatedly.   3) Navigate to and choose Now Playing.   You should...

Emphasis mine. It's definitely the preferred method, for one simple reason: filenames are limited to certain characters, and exclude many.  Tags, on the other hand, do not have this limitation.  I've already come across several of my tracks with underscores or strange "x in a box" symbols where...

From Fiio's FAQ (for the E17, but applies to all their products):   As for all the responses concerned with tagging:  I'll probably collect my X5 today from the delivery centre (couldn't stay in to receive the Signed For parcel, darn it), but if it's just a track name <> filename error, I...

    The Fiio X5 Thread

We've got a thread 584 pages long and we're only now finding out that the X5 doesn't implement tags properly?  To heck with EQ and the colours of the GUI, why on earth doesn't a $350 audiophile DAP with no in-built storage properly implement this most integral, vital and commonly-supported...

Can someone confirm that the X5 can't read the Track No. tag?  This apparently in addition to the fact it can't read the Disc No. (Part Of A Set) tag.

Wait wait wait.  The X5 doesn't read tag info?  So whether you browse by folder or category, you still just use filename info to choose songs?

For those with Macs having problems with those extraneous hidden files: CleanMyDrive.  Available free on the App Store for the time-being, and actively supported.  "Eject for Windows" hasn't been updated since 2011. HTH.

Does the Category > Album mode list tracks according to the Track No. tag?  I asked this earlier following a post from someone who indicated this may not be the case, but no-one's responded yet.  And is the Track Title pulled from the filename or the Track Title tag?

AKG K450s falling apart - should I repair or replace, and suggestions for latter?

One of the earpads on my AKG K450s has started to peel away exposing the underlying foam.  The longer of the two cables has now frayed and only plays one channel.  So, I'm wondering: should I attempt to repair them, or just replace them?  Suggestions for replacements are welcomed.  Something...

Makes me wonder, would I get better sound by introducing an in-line volume control between my headphones and the X5's line-out and avoiding the HPO entirely?  I don't need or want Balance or EQ adjustments, and that way I'd avoid the volume stepping too.

I heartily recommend you file that FLAC issue as a bug, the dev has always seemed to me to be keen to make his app as comprehensive and as bug free as possible.  You might get a fix in a matter of days, he releases frequently (or he used to anyway).   Stand-alone tagging is probably possible...

Also, try XLD. It's a one stop shop for ripping and tagging to many, many formats and is all I have used for some time now.  It includes AccurateRip support, sample offset adjustment etc., and is still maintained.

SD cards should ideally be formatted with the official, free and recommended SD Formatter application, available on the SD Card website (I don't think I'm allowed to post links yet) for both Mac and PC.  It respects special protected areas that other formatters ignore, apparently.

OMG. Only a "slight improvement" over a 160GB iPod Classic?  I hate the sound of my MB145LL 160GB iPod Classic 1st Gen, and was buying the X5 as an upgrade.  Now I wonder if I should bother.  Can anyone else offer a comparison with an iPod Classic?  I much prefer the sound of my Nokia N8, and...
