My HE-5LE just died again!
A few days after they started working again, they died again and did not come back to life. So I sent them out for service. This time around, the good folks over at HiFi-Man decided to simply take care of it for me since I'd already had them replaced 9 months or so prior. All I had to do was...- DarkWolf

My HE-5LE just died again!
Grrr! I bought the first set used in October 2011. They worked great until July 2013. Then one driver cut out, just out of the blue. Fair enough, Hifi-Man took care of it. The whole thing cost about $130 with shipping because they were out of warranty. Now it's just happened again! That was 7 or...- DarkWolf

Creative Sound Blaster new series Z, Zx & ZxR
It sounds to me like you are pretty sure the card isn't to your liking. If you have all the wacky enhancements turned off and the speakers are setup right and none of the speakers you have and are familiar with sound good with the new card, then I don't think there's much else to do. Maybe try...- DarkWolf

Creative Sound Blaster new series Z, Zx & ZxR
You're giving us a lot to read and not much info. What speakers are you using? Which cards have you used with the same speakers? What aspect of the sound is not to your liking, the over all quality, or the DSP features? (SBX, crystalizer, etc.) If you're using the card with the same set of...- DarkWolf

Creative Sound Blaster new series Z, Zx & ZxR
I got the card yesterday and spent some time with Battlefield 4. So far so good. I'm still not sure if SBX is helping positional cues or not, but it does make the sound feel bigger and a little farther outside the phones, which is cool. BF4 has it's own confusing sound options, and I'm not sure...- DarkWolf

Creative Sound Blaster new series Z, Zx & ZxR
Yes, CMSS-3D might be good for a competitive gamer who just wants to win.. But like I said before, surround sound in a can. They should trade mark the slogan.. Anyway, I placed the order with newegg this morning, maybe I'll have it by the end of the week.- DarkWolf

Creative Sound Blaster new series Z, Zx & ZxR
I could see that. Having listened to some recordings and watching several comparisons on youtube, the SBX sound isn't as "distant" as it is with Dolby Headphone. But the Dolby sounds off to me. So does Razer's app. I still think that the basic Realtek sound is the most natural and the...- DarkWolf

Creative Sound Blaster new series Z, Zx & ZxR
Just listening to Dreyka's recordings now. The raw 5.1 audio seems both very small, but also, much more quiet a recording? That said the SBX seems quite impressive. Not at all like CMSS-3D's surround sound in a can.- DarkWolf

Cool! So the question is then; How many of us audiophile gamers actually like SBX Surround?- DarkWolf

Creative Sound Blaster new series Z, Zx & ZxR
I saw that the basic Z OEM is on sale at newegg for $60 right now. Naturally, I came straight here. My one and only interest for this card would be using SBX Surround in games, with S/PDIF out to the rig in my signature. Right now, I have an Auzentech Prelude 7.1 going completely to waste...- DarkWolf

The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
Interesting info. I did a few more rounds with CMSS-3D and EAX disabled, and that really helps. Without all the cheesy reverb, I can hear what's going on. Compair to using no DSP, the sound sort of seems larger and more open, and I could maybe hear someone coming from farther sway. In a game...- DarkWolf

The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
Respond to comments: Evshrug, I understood what Nameless said, but I had stated that I can't find any setting anywhere to output the stereo mix to digital without using What U Hear. Which is still true. It doesn't seem to be in any of Windows' or Creative's control panels. This maybe...- DarkWolf

Aureal A3D
I remember back in the day, playing Quake 3 before and after installing a Terratec DMX 6-Fire that supported A3D. I was completely stunned by the positional audio! I could fire a rocket into a doorway and hit someone dead on at the exact moment they came into sight because I knew exactly where...- DarkWolf

The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
Ok. I've played a few games with my HE-5LE using CMSS-3D on headphone and What U Hear outputting to SPDIF. This sounds a lot better than the 590s, which really bring out the DSP's bright, thin sound signature. I have also gone back and played a few games without any DSP effects and just used...- DarkWolf

The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
So far, I've tried a little gaming with my Sennheiser HD590s plugged into the card and CMSS-3D headphone enabled. Didn't actually care for it. Apples and oranges between HD590 and HE-5LE though. I also tried that Razer Surround software I came across on some youtube demos.. On youtube, the new...- DarkWolf

The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
I admit I have not read through a large portion of this thread, so sorry if any of my questions have been answered at some point. I have an Auzentech Prelude 7.1 and am using coax SPDIF out to an Audio-GD NFB-10SE and then to Hi-FiMan HE-5LE phones, balanced. I am specifically interested in...- DarkWolf

HE-5LE : My left driver stopped working. What now?
I had no warranty to void. I did open the cup, but there was really nothing to see. The drivers them selves are basically like a near-solid mass. I guess they have to be very rigid to hold all those high powered magnets in check. Did a little searching and found a youtube video from someone...- DarkWolf

HE-5LE : My left driver stopped working. What now?
Well, I manned up and opened the cup. There still isn't much to see. As far as I can tell now, the driver just up and died. I will try to remember to bring my multimeter home from work so I can better check for input to the driver. If there's voltage going in, then I guess I will have no choice...- DarkWolf

HE-5LE : My left driver stopped working. What now?
My HE-5LE have never had a single problem, and were working perfectly the last time I set them down. That was either this morning or last night. This evening there is no sound at all from the left driver. I switched cables, and checked my amp (NFB-10SE) with other phones. It is the driver...- DarkWolf

Official NY /Regional Spring meet, April 20 2013
Now that I'm single and can make my own plans again... Pencil me in! Since it seems to be on a Saturday, I will have to try and get it off from work. I would bring my NFB-10SE, Hifiman HE-5LE and I guess then my PC to run them. Maybe some other stuff like bass vented Grado 325i, Corda HA-1 and...- DarkWolf

should I buy a DAC/AMP or not?
The Cmoy is an amp, obviously. An amp should be connected a line level output. (This is a fixed volume, low power signal meant to be amplified without introducing distortion.) Either of your Sony devices that except digital input are likely to have a line out on the rear. You can also plug the...- DarkWolf

How can I do this?
Ok, I broke down and tried just plugging the other amp into the single ended port to limit the volume. It's a perfectly workable solution for now. I still feel like an a-hole using a headfive just to tone down another amp, so it would be cool if I could get the speaker outs working at the same...- DarkWolf

How can I do this?
I got an NFB-10SE finally! YAY! It's fantastic, almost like getting my HE-5LE all over again. I'm not here to review it though. The one thing I want to do that I'm stumped on, is getting analogue output at the same time as my digital. The 10SE won't run its rear line outs at the same time...- DarkWolf
