REVIEW: Ray Samuels Emmeline Dark Star Fully Balanced Headphone Amp

I was at Ray's a few weeks ago and he went through the cost of most of the components.   I can guarantee that this is not a money maker for him.  He is making this one for the love of it.  For those that got the intro price, I don't know if he made a dime.  Maybe a nickel.    It takes a very...

Benchmark DAC1 now available with USB

Elias, Page 18 got edited correctly and the titles and pictures on page 19 are now correct. The descriptions on page 19 for changing the jumpers are still wrong though and are copied from the Pre manual with the wrong jumpers described. Sorry to be a pain but... Also, I second the request...

Benchmark DAC1 now available with USB

Hey Elias, Looks like the manual for the HDR needs an update. The section on changing the jumpers is the old one from the PRE manual, pages 15 and 16. You need to change the header descriptions and photos on pages 18 and 19 of the HDR manual to indicate the new header numbers. Here is the...

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

Just be aware that using a Frankensteined headphone out would rely on the soundcard and/or headphone out on your computer, which, if you are looking for bit perfect, is usually the weakest link in the chain. With USB, ASIO/WASAPI and F2k you will be all set. Don't worry about the bit depth...

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

You will give up 24 bit for 16 bit if you use the USB instead of SPIDF with F2k (without ASIO4ALL or WASAPI), but.... from the Benchmark thread: "I recommend USB of the DAC1 PRE. We've looked at a lot of sound cards, and we haven't found a sound card that does what its supposed to...

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

I don't really see why it would work particularly better with 16 bit over the others. Your best bet would be to turn it off, set voulme to max, and use an analog volume control to avoid truncation. (Use your amp to control the volume) If you don't use an amp, the dithering component inside F2k...

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

No, thank you, it's a good resource. My comment above regarding 16 bit for USB was for Maxvla's DACmagic in particular. Other DAC's can accomodate 24 bit word length (including the Benchmark), so I would note that the bit depth be set to the user's individual DAC's capabilities.

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

I have always used the settings recommended by Benchmark in: Foobar2000 for Windows - Setup Guide - Benchmark The bit depth should be set to the maximum of your hardware. For Maxvla that would be 24 bit as you are using the DACmagic - via spdif, 16 bit via USB. If your DAC does not...

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

Sorry, I wasn't too clear there. The dll from here: foobar2000: Download foobar2000 and optional components needs to be in your components folder.

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

First you need to add it to your components folder in F2k - which I am sure you did. Then you have to add ASIO4ALL to the output, and then map it to your F2k. This article shows how to with the older version of ASIO4ALL, but the mapping part is still accurate. Scroll down to the bit about...

EAC Foobar ASIO4ALL WASAPI Settings Pictorial

I would recommend setting Foobar2000 to output at 24 bit, not 16 as pictured, so as not to truncate data.

Cowon S9 - Only the best - With Pictures and Videos!!

Here is the official response by Cowon to the album art problem. Not too encouraging from them, to say the least.

Cowon S9 - Only the best - With Pictures and Videos!!

Yes, Media Monkey did keep the album art. What you need to do is bring your media into MM. Then create a playlist in MM and sync it with the S9. Once that was done I finally had cover art on all my audio. Now the bad part: Once I had built up a playlist in MM that would fit on the player, it...

Cowon S9 - Only the best - With Pictures and Videos!!

Media Monkey did the trick, just took a while to get aclimated to the program. One downside though, is it takes a Very Long Time!!! Well over an hour and a half to put 16g of music on the machine. I still hope Cowon updates their firmware to accomodate the drag and drop and can free me from...

Cowon S9 - Only the best - With Pictures and Videos!!

^^^ Yes it does show the album art in WMP, but what I am talking about is the folders themselves lose the thumbnails of the album art when you convert from "folder.jpg" to "cover.jpg". I am very visually organized and can find things much better if there is an appropriate thumbnail on the...

Thanks for that, it looks like a good tool that I will save. But if you convert folder.jpg to cover.jpg you lose the cover art in Windows on the media computer.

Cowon S9 - Only the best - With Pictures and Videos!!

Curious - When you rename your album art to "cover.jpg", the folders in Windows/My Music no longer show the album art. What is the deal here? I certainly don't want to lose this feature on the home computer, nor do I want to increase the file size with having two images in each folder, one...

Ugh! I will hope for a firmware update then, and start the long and arduous task of renaming, thank you very much Cowon! Thanks for the quick reply though. Got to like Head-Fi for the great community.

Cowon S9 - Only the best - With Pictures and Videos!!

All my art is a folder.jpg file, not cover.jpg. This is the default filename that WMP gives to cover art. I originally ripped everything using WMP, then discovered EAC for FLAC. I reused the folders originally created by WMP to store my FLAC rips after deleting the contents and left the cover...

Cowon S9 - Only the best - With Pictures and Videos!!

Album cover art is a bit frustrating here as well. With a very large collection of FLAC ripped with EAC, I have all my music tagged with album art as a folder.jpg. I have tried both synching the player as well as drag and drop, which I would prefer. I have tried MSC and MTP modes and I am...
