    a-Jays 5

You're coming from a headphone I find to be very pushy and forward in the mid-range, in particular above about 1KHz, and while there is some sensation of mid-range veil with the a-jays five, it's not detrimental to their quality.

    a-JAYS Five?

I have them.   Short answer: comfortable. A tad bass heavy, but not dark or chesty - midrange may be a tad recessed, and there is some loss of detail, but nothing alarming, and they are still a pleasant listen.  Sounds nothing like the previous a-jays models, which is a good thing - the 4 were...

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)

Jay: Have a look at this frequency response comparison:   http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=2861&graphID[]=2851&scale=20   That is the Sennheiser HD 598 and 558.  The driver on those two headphones are identical (quite literally the same part number...

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)

Just so we're clear here. Most of where this headphone fails does not have to do with the driver - I expect that if you want to make significant changes to the response curve, you will have to modify the motor or the damping of the driver itself.  That said - the driver on this thing _is_ pretty...

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)

Which peak?   They are a tad recessed above 2 kHz, and slightly hot at 9-10 kHz. It might be possible to change some of this by changing the ventilation at the rear of the driver - that'd come after any other mod I'm planning, though.

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)

Can be any number of reasons, but in the case of the TH-02, I rather suspect it's 90% to do with the plastic in the enclosure resonating, as it's a quite thin plastic - if you take the headphones off, and turn them up loud, you can very much feel the entire ear cup vibrating along with the...

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)

I took some nekkid pictures of the TH-02 here: http://imgur.com/a/0P8PZ - as you can see, this headphone is very easy to mod.  I'm getting a second pair so that I can try out various modifications, including a full conversion to an open can, and I'll also have a shot at fixing the issues that...

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)

While the Takstar TS-610 appears very similar to the Tascam TH-02/TEAC CT-H02, it's not the same headphone (the earcup design is identical, and there are minor variations in the headband) - as evident by the 60Ω impedance for the Takstar vs 32 for Tascam/TEAC

    Focusrite Scarlett 8i6

Note that overall, The Focusrite 8i6 is a very good interface, but the headphone output is not: Relatively low power, and a significant output impedance (not enough to tilt the frequency response of a 250 ohm can, though). With cans that are not trivial to drive (read: Your 880's), I would...

    Edit Signature

Are there any particular rules governing who can and can't have signatures? I have relatively few posts under my belt, so I assumed it was bound to the post count, but couldn't find anything in particular.   In other words: I don't seem to have the ability to add a signature, but I would...

@zeitfliesst To use these with a sub, there are two things you need: 1. A subwoofer with low-level inputs and outputs. 2. Something that can act as a volume control - when a sub is connected The reason for the second requirement is because you can no longer use the volume control on the AV 40's...

Hi. Not too difficult when I keep similar user names all over, is it :-) Oh well - back to writing about the similarities between the NAD M2 and your electric oven in my new series of "Explain it like I'm five" articles about audiophilia.

Review by 'Arve' on item 'M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Speakers'

My review is much too long to paste here, so the full-length-review can be found here.   I will however summarize my review quickly, and expand a bit on it:   These are a good choice if you are a producer on an extremely tight budget - as a "my first studio monitor" speaker Sound stage...

EarPods - Apples newest entry into IEM

Quote:   I quite agree that them being open is a conscious choice by apple, both for safety and convenience (You don't have to remove them to order something when you're at starbucks, just pause the music).   Also, I think the open design improves the sound stage quite a bit, and for...

Can you recommend some earbuds in the $150 range?

Quote:   If a seal was needed for great sound quality, by extension all open circum- or supra-aural headphones would suck.  I'm pretty sure there are a few Stax, HD-800 and LCD-2-owners who would take issue with that.

EarPods - Apples newest entry into IEM

They leak far less than before - there is a graph midway down in this review that shows the difference from the old.

Can you recommend some earbuds in the $150 range?

I have them, and would have to say they are an extremely pleasant surprise, and for $29 it's actually hard to go wrong.   They're pretty much the champions for sound stage No microphonics whatsoever. I've tried banging the cable on my desk, without having my ears jolted Little in terms of...

@milan425: The cable is not exactly the same as before - the old one had two different materials, with different grippiness - the new cable is grippy all over, but less so than the old cable, and perhaps less prone to tangling than the old one. I'm saying perhaps because I'd have to test it over...

EarPods - Apples newest entry into IEM

Quote:     I'm surprised, really.  I couldn't wear the old ones for more than five minutes at a time, because they chafed and were painful to keep in (not that I would anyway, because of their rather terrible sound).  I've tried wearing the new ones for hours at a time, and have never...

    B&W P5 vs Shure SE 215

Did you mean the B&W C5?  The P5 is a $350 closed supraural headphone, and isn't easily comparable to a $100 IEM.

    Apple Earpods Review

Quote:   IMHO, Burn-in is mostly a myth.  If you actually look at the graphs in Tyll Hertsens' experiment on the AKG Q701, it's very dubious whether the changes you see are actually at all audible.     Personally, I will attribute the huge differences people claim to hear to be...

    Apple Earpods Review

Quote:     That is due to sensitivity, not impedance. Sensitivity is defined as how loud something gets with a given voltage over the terminals.  I'm not sure if there is a standard way to measure sensitivity for headphones, but for loudspeakers it's defined as the loudness measured...
