I can think of three reasons, personally. Brand, cost of research and the commonly gold-plated plugs that come with most mid-range sets.

A chain is as strong as its weakest link. I agree with the above statement, but one cannot use the aluminium cups without proper forks to hold them :)   P.S. I also experienced some creaking of the plastic headband when I move my head but that is negligible for me.

Update. I just shipped them back - their build quality is appalling - I discovered the infamous crack in one of the forks. I'm on the road to give up the idea of getting good cans :(

I'd advise against the HTF600 unless you like your ears being melted... over and over again. And they've also got lots of head-hurting bass (and I consider myself to be a moderate basshead!).
