@ thelostMIDrange WOW!  thats freaking amazing!  thanks for the tip.  i was kinda bummed that the tigermaple looked so plain.   i'm definitely gonna get some dyes now and try that out.

i actually gain bass.  i think its because there's more chamber volume in the coned cups.  i noticed that when i didn't cone the cups, the longer the chambers were, the more the bass came forward but also the highs became more recessed. the highs sound the best somewhere between 1 1/8" and 1...

    grado sr60i cup tuning

testing was done this time around with single cup instant a/b and full headset comparisons on the sr60i drivers.   note: the chambers are all unfinished, sanded wood.  interestingly enough i found that i can further tune the cups by rubbing my fingers around the insides of the cups.  the...

one wood down about 8 to go.  i just turned out a set of bocote cups.  amazingly striking wood.    i compared them back to back with my mahogany cups, using the sr225i's as a reference point between the mahogany and bocote cups   the bocote was an extreme pain to work with as the fibers...

wow.  model m?  that thing is a relic!  buckling spring? how do they feel compared to the cherry blues?   i bought some filco majestouch's;  one with blues and one with browns.  i gave the blues to my dad.  he was trippin out at the retro feel of the clicky keys.  although i do like the...

    grado sr60i cup tuning

so theres bad news and good news.  bad news is that i tested the drivers out of their shells and in these 2 almost identical mahog shells and the drivers are a bit different.  one is a little bit cleaner and crisper where as the other sounds a bit darker and more worn in.  the overall difference...

    grado sr60i cup tuning

I tried switching them between cups after i make a solid distinction between the two sounds.  i came up with the same results the two or three times i did it but i did sense a difference between the drivers.  but because i haven't really picked out a difference between the drivers, i feel that i...

i just did a comparison between the 1 1/8" straight wall to the 1 1/4 straight wall.     conclusions: shorter length = airy and clean highs and more presence, cleaner bass but less bass and mids  longer = more bass more mids more low end distortion, tin can highs

couple more impressions.     i cut down the larger of the rough mahogany cups to 1 1/8".  like thelostmidrange found, the highs really do open up compared to the other lengths of straight walled cups.  much more accurate and much less of the tin can feel.  although, as i search deeper...

i didn't know they were that similar.  i just got some walnut and koa.  the zebrawood, cocobolo and bocote are still on the way.     i'll try to do a thorough comparison of all the woods.  coco and mahog will be the first i do

@BGRoberts  ...you're totally right. haha. they do look like shreks ears now that u mention it.  i was wondering why i felt like ive seen the shape before :P   @thelostMIDrange i will definitely try the 1 1/8"  i'm going to use the larger rough shaped mahog cup and cut it down to compare the...

    grado sr60i cup tuning

i'm doing the A/B like you stated, with each driver in a different cup.  I was thinking about the driver variance so after i make an opinion i switch the cups to the opposite driver to see if the differences still stand.  although i think i may notice a difference between each driver,  it feels...

    grado sr60i cup tuning

Mainly inspired by thelostmidrange I decided to do my own experiments on cup tuning.  this thread is not meant to give be all end all opinions.  it is intended to be more of a journal of my fwj exploits.     all comments are welcome and the interest in my jorney is appreciated.   for...

    cup tuning basics.

it seems to me that this whole trend of color neutrality is just an extension of certain peoples sensitivity to the trauma of listening to headphones like sony's mdr or beyer dynamics.  but i guess i wouldn't know because i actually like my dt770 80's (though maybe not for music)   of the...

    hello head-fi

i'm not really doing much to them.  liberated drivers in full wood jacket and recable.  i might mess with some driver mods but that probably wont happen until i'm done experimenting with the different cup shapes.

    hello head-fi

thanks for the interest!  my turnings are getting better every day.  I'm definitely going to put up pics of the cups on the thread.  I'm still waiting for one more type of wood to arrive before i start it up.  i'm definitely hoping to spread some fwj love and get some help as i go along through...
