Recommend a DAP with line in recording

I am looking for recommendations for a small inexpensive Digital Audoi Player which has line in recording capability. It does not need to be great quality, but wav recording (as opposed to mp3 of wma) would be nice. I would take any kind of recording though. It looks like the Toshiba Gigabeat...

Which iem would be comparable to me sr-60's?

I have to disagree with Piccolo, not that I think you are wrong, I just disagree. For me the magic of Grados is all in the mids. They (Grados) don't have the deepest bass, or smoothest highs. They are adequate in both areas, but they do not excel. What I like about Grado (I have the SR-60 and...

    HD595 vs Shure E4 SQ

It's hard to say it better than this graph shows. The E4c has a warmer, fuller sound (better low frequency extension) that the 595. They both have a dark presentation lacking a bit in the upper mids (That dip around 4kHz). Personally I think the E4c's get a lot better (brighter) with a home made...

    Which Grado should I get?

**Ducks head under desk before SH** fliies at me** Don't buy any of the above mentioned "Grado's" until you have heard the RS-2. IMO (I repeat IMO) the RS-2 is way better than all of the other Graods. It has a nice warm and yes woody sound. It works great with everything from hard and heavy...

    Help It is vey important

If the earphones are black (and that is what you wanted) then there is no problem. I purchased the same earphones (not from ebay) and got the same red box. The earphones inside should be the same as long as the box is sealed.

Need an amp/computer soundcard for home and portable use

Ditto, go with a Total Bithead (2006 version). I "downgraded" to one recently if you can really call it downgrading. I needed something more portable than my microstack (2005 w/ desktop module) for my many trips to China. Personally I could just barely tell the difference. In the end, I sold...

    Shure e4c pricing.

I just got mine for $180 from earphonesolutions.com. A trusted site and a Head-Fi sponsor. I believe HeadRoom offeres a similar price, but you have to call/email BOTH places to get their best price.

Rank the Headphones that You Own.

    1) RS-2 2) DT 250/250 (maybe swapped with #3, depending on mood) 3) E4c 4) HD-595 5) SuperFi 5 EB 6) ER-6 (just sent them away, boo hoo) 7) SuperFi 3 8) AKG K240DF 9) PortaPros 10) MX-400

Where to get those little black plastic caps for Grado headphones

Your other option is to get some plasti-dip from you local hardware store and make new ones yourself. That will also alow you to choose a new color if you like. It usually sells for less than 10 bucks a can and comes in a few colors. http://www.plastidip.com/consumer/index.html...

Which Grado is the best for electronic/hip-hop/jazz? First Grado purchase btw...

Warning: Personal preference to follow. IMO the sweet spots in the Grado line are the SR-60 (Grado sound on the cheap), the SR-225 (the killer rock can), and the RS-2 (yeah I think I like them even better than the RS-1). If you are looking to spend big bucks, you can often find a used...

    IEMs specifically for rock

Sorry for another "what should I buy" thread, but I need some advice. I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket, and I think it would be best spent on an IEM upgrade. I am currently using ER6s and SuperFi 3s directly out of my iPod. I have an Airhead but I only use when traveling. When...

Want to get first dedicated amp - ASL MG Head OTL MKIII?

The power supply I have with my OTL Mark III is switchable between 120VAC and 240VAC. I assume that the 240VAC setting will work for 220VAC, but since we are on 120 here in the US, I can not confirm that. I do not have HD-650s (or 600s) so I can not comment on how good they sound with the...

Antique Sound Lab MG Head DT / OTL MK III Headphone Amp

I have an MG-Head OTL Mark III and a HeadRoom MicroStack. Personally I prefer the MicroAmp with my HD-595s. The Senns tend to sound a little dark and the MKIII has a midbass hump in the 40-80 Hz range. The combined effect make my HD-595s (50 ohms by the way) sound extra dark and muddy. HeadRoom...

does anyone prefer the superfi 5 EB over the superfi pro?

A little bump and a little thread hijaking here. I am actually wondering the same thing. You can get the Superfi 5 EB for $157 or the Superfi 5 Pro for $160 (after rebate) from earhponesolutions. I am having a hard time deciding. I have owned ER-6s (not ER-6is) for many years, and always thought...

Is there anything better than Grado's for rock?

It came from many years of listening to my HD-590s. Yeah I have tried the 580s and 600s. I even own a pair of HD-595s. They all just seem to get guitars wrong. By guitars I mean heavy distorted guitars. Sure acoustic music sound pretty good through Senns, but they just can't do Mudvayne justice...

Is there anything better than Grado's for rock?

If you don't want to hear what the guitarist is playing, Senns are great. If you are a bass player, and don't care about vocals, DT770 are your thing. If you like the sound of small drivers in a Coke can, Sonys SA1k/3k/5k are for you. I am running out of jokes here, so I will remind you...

equalizing the transformer mode of the MG HEAD...

It acutally works out about the same, and here's why. At 200 Hz (the reference point) in OTL mode, the value is about 1.0 The peak at 70 Hz is about 1.2. Converting that to dB you get +1.58 dB. (20*log(1.2/1.0)). That is about the same as the bump in the 32 ohms graph. When I have the time, I...

equalizing the transformer mode of the MG HEAD...

Unfortunately I forgot to save the raw data for the left channel, so here is the right channel data converted to dB scale. Since the dB scale is realtive (rather than absolute), I referenced everything to the response at 200 Hz (the crossover point between the two graphs). I am not sure...

equalizing the transformer mode of the MG HEAD...

OK so I finally got around to doing some measurements. I realize that everyone who reads this will want to shoot holes in it, so let me clarify the setup first. First, I used a small USB d/a and a/d converter attached to my laptop to do the measurements. I won't go into what it is, but I...

What are some good first rocks cans for <$150?

As usual I will tell you to spend more than you want, but you would be best served by finding a used pair of SR-225 around (meaning a little more than) $150. Keep an eye on the For Sale forum for that. If you are unwilling to spend more that $150, any of the SR-60, 80 or MS1 are good...

equalizing the transformer mode of the MG HEAD...

Sorry, was not able to do the test and now my amp is at work for the weekend. Anyway from my understanding, the Transformer on the MKIII is intened to lower the output impedance, and therefore blend better with low impedance cans. It seems that most people (myself included) find the opposite...

equalizing the transformer mode of the MG HEAD...

My only advice to you (since I don't like using EQs at all) it to set the MKIII to OTL mode and leave it there. Yeah, there is an impedance mismatch with low imp cans (like Grados), but the MKIII has enough power (it uses guitar amp tubes) to drive my RS-2s to era splitting (and driver busting)...

What kind of DAC for K701?

Sounds like a HeadRoom Micro DAC ($300) would be perfect for you. It has a USB and an optical/coax input. It would cover all the bases. It's quite small and sounds great and can even run on batteries (2 9V) I am not an expert in these matters, but it was a significant improvement over my...

anyone try the Headroom Micro Amp?

Proud owner of a MicroStack here (with desktop module). Despite their size and portability, they are permanently stationed on my desk at work. For comparison I also have an ASL MG Head/OTL Mark III (a tube amp). IMO the Micro amp compares quite favorably with similarly priced amps. It has a sort...
