NAD M51 Direct Digital DAC Impressions

Late to this party but have had my M51 for a couple 3 months now and it is the most detail resolving dac I have owned or heard.  I owned Mark Levinson 360S dac for many years.  The M51 beats it handily as far as detail retrieval and it bests the Marantz SA11S2 as well in that regard.  The...

Difference between NuForce Icon Mobile and nuforce uDAC?

Icon is a great little dac/amp.  Kicks the crap out of the BitHead I had some years ago.  Maybe improved, different rev by now.  Icon can only be charged via USB.  Has USB in and 1/8" line in.  Line in can be headphone out from MP3 player or line out from MP3 player. Icon has 2 headphone outs. ...

    knife-fi?

They are BIG pocket knives that's for sure.  Better suited to big hands probably.

    knife-fi?

I like my ZT350 CB just fine.  It has normal G10 scales like a spyderco military.  If it was a little longer it would be perfect.

Why is it that even digitized vinyl sounds so good?

I feel sorry for these young folks that did not get their brain wrinkles from vinyl and am radio.

If you had $5000 to spend on a DAC what would you buy?

USB only input is deal breaker for me on the Ayre.

    knife-fi?

The emerson waves I have handled were either so loose that it felt like the blade would fall out or were too spendy to even consider.  Check out Zero Tolerance knives by Kershaw.

Why is it that even digitized vinyl sounds so good?

"Why is it that even digitized vinyl sounds so good?"   possibly because you grew up listening to vinyl and your brain/auditory system was programmed/imprinted with that sound.  I know mine was.  My vinyl rips to an HHb deck sound GREAT to my biased ears.

Recommendations for a good used CD player, $2-$3K budget

Best sounding head rig player I have ever heard is the Marantz Ki Pearl. The Pearl has a special headphone synergy to it. Produces the best bass depth and slam in headphones. Best sounding cd/sacd player I have ever heard is the Marantz SA11S2. These are in the $2K-$3K range used to new.

    The Grado HF-2 Review/Comparison Thread

My HF2 sounds nothing like the MS2i I used to own. The MS2i was virtually unlistenable with any music except metal. They were truely GRATE-O's. Since getting my HF2 about a month ago, they are the only cans I listen to. They are GREAT rock/metal headphones and are VERY GOOD with any thing else I...

    Flashlight-Fi (LED & Conventional)

I hope so but it is a slow change as far as residential and commercial light fixtures and lamps are concerned. Local utility recently launched a commercial lighting energy efficiency rebate program. The exact lamp types, ballasts and mfrs are specified in the program. Not a single LED lamp or...

    Flashlight-Fi (LED & Conventional)

I like the cool white better in your 2 picts. Used to be 10-15 years ago that in fluorescent lamps, a 4100k color temp was white blue and had a high CRI, now there are 4100k's that are still white blue but with CRI's all over the map. LED color temps and CRI's should be the same but they are...

Looking for a new amp for HF-2 and HD650

Woo WA3 here with NOS tubes and both cans U mention. If you get a Woo, ditch the tubes that come with and get some good tubes and it will sing. The HF2 is just a slammin' set of rock-n-roll cans with the WA3. Best rock headphone I have ever owned or heard.

    Flashlight-Fi (LED & Conventional)

Just got a Lumaforce Lf1 yesterday and it is a BRIGHT light for $40 delivered. Looks just like the Solarforce in above picture minus the green paint. Comes in pieces for some reason(?) Had it all screwed together it a minute. Came with 2 CR123A's shrinked together but with the live ends exposed...

    recommendation: headphones for rock

Grado HF-2 but there are OOP and more than $250. Maybe a Gradophile can recommend anothre Grado in that price range that sounds like the HF2 but I doubt it. The HF2 is very unGrado sounding to these ears. Just a GREAT rock-n-roll can!

If you had $5000 to spend on a DAC what would you buy?

When 24/96 discs came out, part of the marketing was that the dynamic range of this a to d conversion exceeded what was capable on analog tape. Great. The holy grail. But 24/192 sounds better. Will 32/xxx sound better yet? Most likely.

Backcountry Edge is having a sale and if you sign up for their EDGE program (mailing list) get another 12% off. I ordered a Kelty Redwing 3100 (2008 model) for $60 delivered. I think the original MSRP was $120. Now I am just waiting for fall.
