    Stax screw sizes? (Lambda Pro)

Hi. I have a pair of old Lambda Pros that I'm rehabbing. I've got everything ready to go, but am missing the tiny screws used to attach the grilles to the main body of each channel. They look like they're between 1-2mm in diameter. Anyone know? Thanks.

Is an intermittent cable connection just outside the frame on a pair of Stax Lambda Pros repairable without replacing?

Finally got around to this and the answer in case it's useful to someone else is yes, it's fine. I cut about two inches off each side to eliminate the section of the cable that would have been flexing around where the cables enter the frame, and resoldered. The connection is great now.

    DIY Disasters

When opening up old vintage stuff, especially if there's plastic involved, be very careful as it can become brittle (or maybe was just brittle and under-speced to start with). Found this out when I was opening up a 1970s-ish vintage pair of Stax SR-3s and almost immediately broke some of the...

Is an intermittent cable connection just outside the frame on a pair of Stax Lambda Pros repairable without replacing?

Hi. I've been rehabbing a pair of beat up old Stax Lambda Pros I bought on German ebay. New headband works great and with the total outlay for the project they're still a great deal. However, when I got them, the left side had a badly intermittent connection that would cut in and out when...

What kind of sound quality to expect from Andrew Radford's DIY electrostatic amp?

I'll bring them into work tomorrow and see if someone has a camera. I'm around a bunch of EEs all day so they all want to see the phones too

Anyone built their own headphone drivers?

I'm also working on a pair of ESL phones right now - the drivers work but I'm troubleshooting the amp right now. Andrew Radford's plans for the drivers don't seem entirely straightforward from the description, but once you rig up some mylar in a stretching jig it will make sense. I would guess...

What kind of sound quality to expect from Andrew Radford's DIY electrostatic amp?

Wow. That response was about 100 times faster than expected, and helpful. The sound is very faint but I think it has the same distortion. I should also note that if I have the transformers wired up for high step up and crank it up, the transformers themselves will "sing", putting out the same...

What kind of sound quality to expect from Andrew Radford's DIY electrostatic amp?

Man, I should've known these DIY ES phones would be the never ending project. Going from the plans on Headwize my pops and I built a pair of ESL drivers and got to work on the simple receiver-driven step-up amplifier. That should be the easy part, right? Not so much. I've tried two sets of...

    Looking for... Grados! (Portland area)

Fred's Sound of Music on SE Hawthorne carries most of the lineup, and last time I was there they had a Grado headphone amp on hand. Very helpful and accomodating to boot.

    Is MD right for me?

Thanks for the response, that answers exactly what I was asking. I've got two more questions now: 1) Would the Etymotic ER-6 be a good choice for use with a MD player, and if so, how much are specially molded plugs for them? 2) I remember hearing back in the day that MDs are not as...

    Is MD right for me?

OK, so here's the situation. I've been without a portable CD player or anything of the sort for quite some time after a stupid mistake playing around with simulating a higher headphone impedance. I don't want to get into that . So anyhow, now that school is about to start back up, I want to get...

    Creating a better MP3 player

This is a duplicate of a post at Headwize, as I want as many answers to this as possible. I have been looking for a good, involved programming project for a long time through which I might actually be able to create a useful product. Lately, I've been pretty dissatisfied with Winamp, XMMS...

    Portland area Head-Fi'ers meet 12/9/01

Oh, I forgot to mention: one of my friends is also a bit of a headphone nut (although we're both students, so neither of us really has money for anything impressive like Stax or Orphei). I'm sure I could get him to come to the meeting. It sounds to me from the last few posts as if a good...

ALICE IN CHAINS, AND RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

I agree with whoever said that Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the best RHCP album, but Californication is pretty entertaining too. Couldn't say about Alice in Chains, but I can tell you that I like what I've heard of them .

    DIY cable questions???

I've been curious lately about using Cat5 for audio cable. Does anyone know which wire pair(s) would be best to use? I know that the orange and green pairs are used for data transmission, and that the various pairs are twisted at different rates to prevent crosstalk, but I have no idea which...

    Portland area Head-Fi'ers meet 12/9/01

I live in Silverton (pretty near Salem) so I'm down for pretty much anywhere in the Willamette valley. Seeing as how I'm a high school student, the times I can do it might be kind of limited, but just name a date and I'll say if I can come or not .

Thanks a ton guys. I ought to have this finished today, thanks to all of your help.

    Problems with Cmoy amp

Ugh, I feel like a moron: I neglected to make the voltage divider and whatever else the instructions called for in the power supply. I've just been running straight off of a nine-volt with nothing in between its terminals and the v+/v- terminals on the opamp. Does this need to be fixed, or does...

    Problems with Cmoy amp

Thanks for the tip, but I don't know if I'll be able to do that. Is it possible that I just need a different value resistor in there? Seems to me that everyone else has been able to put together a good, working amp without modifying the original plans. Also, I tried something else. Since the...

    Problems with Cmoy amp

I recently finished putting my Cmoy amp together, only it doesn't work! The sound is very distorted even at normal listening levels. What's odd is that if I put my finger against C1 and bridge that to ground, it sounds great. I measured the gap across my finger with a multimeter and estimate it...
