    Looking for a 3.5mm socket

Hey guys, long time no see.   There are plenty of PCB-mounted 3.5mm sockets out there that have switches in them that will open/close when a plug has been pushed in.   I was wondering, howeverm if anyone has seen one that can be soldered onto the end of a cable?   Thanks for reading...

    Poor man's pop remover

So I was thinking about the problem of large output caps, and the stress they put on headphones during start up. What if, instead of a power switch, you used a potentiometer with a built in switch? Have the switch wired to power like normal, but wire up the pot between the output cap and...

Is the Zune80 the only real alternative to the iPod Classic?

I'm in the market for a new MP3 player, and looking to stay away from Apple. I'm wanting at least 60gb (might settle for less, but I wouldn't count on it) and a battery life of at least 20hours. Problem is that most places seem to be producing smaller flash players, rather than HDD based...

    A CCS question

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions about the following circuit: (Assuming a transconductance of 1) My questions are: 1) What would the current be before the first mosfet, in the middle of the two mosfets, and after the second mosfet? 2) What would the voltag be in between...

    Guzzler DAC info

Hey guys, Heading over to http://www.mellowparenting.demon.co....er/usbdac.html i find that the schematic and board are no longer up there, which makes it hard to figure out exactly what i want to do with my Alien DAC. Anyone got the files by any chance for those? Thanks, Rob.

How much dc offset is safe for the input of a Dynalo?

Pretty much as per topic. Without caps i get 17mv of dc offset on both the left and right channels on my Alien DAC - would that be safe to feed my Dynalo of Gain 6 with no input caps? Thanks, Rob.

Film caps in a 780* PSU?

Hey guys, Im just making up a quick "PSU" to drop *volts down to 6volts and im using a 7806 for that. I have at my disposal 100uf electryltics and 1uf metal film box caps, which would be best to use on the input and output? Thanks a lot, Rob.

    LM317 vs reg101

Hey guys, I was designing (heavily based on the TREAD mind you :P) a basic LM317 regulator for my soon-to-be-built Alien DAC when i realised something. Just because im not planning on USB voltage is no reason i cant use the onboard reg101's. (And save some space in the process....). That...

I'm suprised that there is no thread on this yet - some other forums im on have upwards of 3. What do you guys think about whats happening up there? Rob.

Do you have an iPod Video and not mind helping me debug?

Care to help me debug? Ive been having troubles since ive got it and ive never been able to work otu why - a quick trip into Diagnostics Mode may have solved that though. Having said that - i need proof its abnormal. What id like you to do is reset your ipod (holding middle button + menu...

    Some (more) MOSFET maths

Hey again, while i can now proudly say that i understand what a mosfet is (thanks to amb on that one ) i have hopped on over to learning about how they behave in a circuit and have come accross two problems: 1) The transconductance of any MOSFETs, such as the IRF510 as used in many designs...

    Trying to understand a MOSFET

Hey guys, ive read a few different webpages on MOSFETs but it seems as if they either go into too much detail, or too little. Here's what i know so far: - Essentially infinate impedance on the gate (for DC) - Transconductance refers to amp per volt But thats as much as i know, and as for...

LM317 as CCS, how much heat?

Hey guys, For my tori-amp im using a LM317 as a CCS drawing about 200mA and im trying to figure out heatsink requirements for it. Appr. how much watts of heat will be created? (And for future refernece: how do i work it out) Rob.

    Output caps for a DAC

Hey guys, im planning to build an Alien DAC and im just deciding what output caps to use (since the output, according to the pcm2702 datasheet, is centered around 2.5v). The Parts List compiled on the website states an electrolytic as low as 4.7uf will work..... but i have these lovely .1uF film...

    Hoodied Grado

Has anyone else found that wearing a hood (from a sweatshirt, etc.) over Grado improved SQ? It sounds as if the low-mids are a bit muddier, but what you get in return for this trade off is a wider sound stange and slightly more seperation. (To my ears anyways) Rob.

Can a transistor be used as a diode?

Okay, so a diode is P-N material, and a transistor is P-N-P, does that mean that using only the base and emiter terminals of a transistor would turn it into a diode? If not - why not? Rob.

    PSU Option

Hey guys, im trying to decide on a PSU to power my Tori-amp (Opamp with a MOSFET in the feedback loop to provide current gain). I am looking for smething a little more "complex" than a TREAD/STEPS/LM317-based PSU. One option is the Dynahi PSU, but the problem is the fact that i cant find...

    My Tori-amp PCB design

Hey guys, I would really appreciate any and all feedback on my PCB design. Bar a szekers i did but never actually made up this is my first go - and i am planning to hand etch it. http://members.optusnet.com.au/robzy/tori.gif (80kb) Thanks, Rob.

lm317 as a constant current source - what voltage does the resistor see?

Howdy Using a LM317T as a constant current souce you use a resistor to set the current (altough if your able to answer my question, youd probably already know that :P) If i have the LM317 set up for a constant current of 200-250mA what watt-age should i make the the resistor is capable of...

    Ebay silver mica capacitors?

Hey guys, I saw some cheap-ish silver mica capacitors on ebay - a quick search here though revealed they may not be so trustworthy. These are the ones i am looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Radial-Silver...QQcmdZViewItem Do you reckon they are leggit? Rob.

This oscilliscope any good for audio?

Hey guys, I have been offered one a GOS-622 oscilliscope for a good price and was wondering what they were like for audio. Here are the specs: http://www.flite.co.uk/gos-622g-20mh...illoscopes.htm (Its the 20Mhz version) Also - what does one look for when choosing an oscilliscope to...

    Guidelines for self-etched PCB design?

Hey guys, im designing my own PCB (A Tori-Amp) in Labcentre Proteus ARES. I was curious to know these peices of info: 1) What size to use for audio/power traces? 2) What clearance to use for the audio/power traces to the ground plane? 3) What size pads/holes are typical for resistors...

Do people use Proteus ARES for board layouts?

Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone (or how many people) use Proteus ARES for doing board layouts. I am using it now, but seem to have run into a bit of a problem - wondering whether it would be worth asking it here. Rob.

    Will this amp (cmoy+szekeres) work?

Hey guys, Just finished drawing up my szekeres with a cmoy hacked on. It will be powered off a 15v PSU. Any comments/suggestions? Anythings that will obviously not work? (Im not 100% sure if i have configured the opamp for a single voltage PSU properly) (I have both a resistor and CCS...
