But if processing is turned off (i.e., no lights showing), then wouldn't the width control not be functional? As I read the manual, it sounds like it would be just straight, unprocessed stereo.

Same issue I had with mine. Look on page one of this thread for a solution. I did the same thing - cut an adhesive label very thin and taped it on the center of each knob as a marker. It did the trick.

I could very well be sending surround-encoded PCM to the Syn. The TV setting only allows for sending PCM through the optical out, but it doesn't specify stereo or multichannel, so there's no way to tell. But I got a box that de-embeds the audio from HDMI so I don't need to deal with the TV...

After reading Jason's account of the blind testing of the 3 versions of the Yggy as well as what various posters have had to say (basically, no consensus on which is "best" or a favorite), I am convinced that this is all just an insidious plot by Schiit to get people to buy all three versions.
