A big +1 on this. I had a DAC-1 PRE for years while other DAC's came and went and a DAC-1 in another system as well and the DAC-2 is better to my ears as well.

No it doesn't. That was part of the reason I sold mine. I didn't like having to shut my sub off whenever I wanted to listen to my headphones.

No problem adjusting the jumpers here. Set to 0dB and working great with my HE-500's and K701's.   I would not worry about the DAC2's reliability. I believe Benchmark products are as reliable as you're likely to find, and in the event that something should fail I don't think you'd ever have...

Why do you even need two DAC's? Just use the RCA outputs for the speakers and the XLR outputs for the sub or vice versa. You can buy XLR->RCA adapters or cables if need be.   If you really did need 2 DAC's though you could always just buy a USB->S/PDIF converter and use 2 digital outs from...

I wiped my laptop and installed Windows 8 but the problem persists. So far the U18 has worked every time I have unplugged and re-plugged the USB cable though.
