Collectors of Stax headphones will agree that the Sigma series is one of the best headphones ever made.
It was the Sigma that obtained fame for its creator (Naotake Hayashi) and for Stax the company.
His innovation lies in the creation of a headphone system that mimicked listening to speakers in a partially reflective space or room.
The design lets you enjoy more natural ambience reproduction than usually possible with conventional headphones because diaphragms inside the units are placed facing forward. This means that the outer ear is not pressed directly facing the diaphragms (as in conventional headphones). The carefully designed cavity in the SR-Sigma results in resonance characteristics simulating those occurring in a concert hall or spacious venue. This is often referred to as the “panoramic” sound field, a term strongly associated with the Stax SR-Sigmas. This is in contrast to conventional headphones where the sound seems to be centered within the listeners head.
The lightweight materials make the Stax SR-Sigma great for listening for long periods of time, which is also why Stax electrostatic earspeakers were widely used by the best recording studios and broadcast stations in the world in the 1980s and 1990s.
