This is a high end headphone tube amp but can also be used for high efficiency speakers.
This is the 2A3 version, not the 300B version most people sell. 2A3 tubes are very similar to 300B tubes but cost less, which is why I chose this model. These tubes are also used in other high end amps like the DNA Stratus and Stellaris.
It cost me $6000 CAD ($4500 USD) to get it shipped to Canada after exchange rate, taxes, shipping, and import fees - but I am still offering it as a price competitive with used models from the US that are older and that the seller did not need to pay import taxes on.
If you're not familiar with Eddie Current they have a reputation as one of the highest quality headphone tube amp manufacturers, along with Donald North Audio. The owner of the company who builds these amps by hand is supposedly going to retire soon, and the Studio B may be the last model they ever build. It's a watered down version of their top of the line Studio amp, which is no longer produced.
My personal experience was this was the best tube amp I've ever listened to. It's much clearer, not muddy or veiled, and has some extra body or warmth compared to solid state amps which is hard to describe. Plus it looks really cool! I decided to sell because it's just too expensive to justify. I own a solid state amp which doesn't sound as good, but it costs much less and I'm happy with the trade off. If you're a fan of the tube sound, and especially if you own some 300 ohm headphones like ZMF, Sennheiser, or Beyerdynamic then this might be the top of the line amp you've been looking for. I mainly own lower impedance headphones and they sounded good on this amp, but from what I read the full potential comes out with the higher impedance headphones.
The amp does not come with the large 2A3 tubes included, only the two smaller ones. I bought some different matched tube pairs, which I can include at a discount:
- JJ 2A3 40W (in the photos) from Tube Depot https://www.tubedepot.com/products/jj-2a3-40-watt-power-vacuum-tube
$200 USD. I definitely heard a difference from the extra wattage
- old stock RCA tubes from the 40's $100 USD. Had a smoother sound than the JJs, but not as much power.
This comes in two large, heavy boxes so I would prefer local pick up in Toronto, Canada. If it must be shipped be prepared to pay $200+ for shipping.
