Interesting! Thanks for the info. I'm curious now but what serial numbers are good?
There was a baffle mesh material change somewhere before <20k, but the primary sound difference most people hear comes from pad wear. There are entire threads involving measurement gear with pads equalized essentially debunking the SN hype. There is also slight unit-to-unit variation and driver matching that some people fail to take into account, which exists with every headphone, not just HD800. I suppose it might feel more special to own an older one though :)

it wasn't exactly pad wear, but the ear pads themselves were different (wider ear aperture on the earlier models).
