Do you mind sharing WHY did you decide to sell the May DAC?
Sure. Literally the only reason I sold the May is I got a ridiculous deal on a demo Soulution 560 DAC from a dealer friend. Let’s just say it’s the kind a deal you don’t pass up…

Selling the Serene was mostly collateral damage due to selling the May as the 560 is so good I didn’t want anything between it and my tube and SS amps. So much so, that I’d rather run one of my amps unbalanced to the 560 DAC with RCA’s, which eliminates my need for a preamp all together.

I will always have a soft spot for the May and it is truly the best sounding and most versatile DAC at, or anywhere close, to its price range in my opinion. For reference, I also personally preferred it over the Chord Dave. Once you go R2R and get used to a more analog and accurate sounding presentation it is incredibly difficult to use anything else.

Thank you so much for your kind sharing. I have been struggling among Dave, May, denafrips Terminator and Linn. I owned metrum r2r dac so I am fully aware the full, analogue and warm r2r sound. My only concern of r2r versus Dave and linn are speed, transient, as well as if the highs are overly rolled off, ending up sounding boring, dull, slow, less shining and sparkling.

You are quite welcome! In the end, it comes down to personal preference. If you are after liveliness, dynamics, speed, and more overall "pop" at the expense of a more digital and processed sound, the Chord Dave is probably for you. If you are after a smoother, more "accurate" presentation with great holographics and 3D imaging at the expense of a more "boring and dull" analog presentation, the May is probably for you. Unfortunately, I've never tried the Terminator or Linn, so I can't help there. Regardless, both the Dave and the May could both work in either use case to varying degrees depending on what you put around them. Good luck on your quest!
