Sony MDR-1AM2 - Impressions Thread

The Wavelet app on Android works really well with the MDR-1AM2 auto preset, makes them sound more "HiFi" and mostly removes the Sony house sound. Using with my Sony Experia 5 Mark IV on it's built in headphone jack and it sounds very good. The Sony Experia 5 IV drives them without problem to high volume.

Regarding Bluetooth, my Sony H900N can be made sound much better by messing with bluetooth settings under Developer Options on Android, if you have enabled that menu. Default is a lesser Bluetooth quality, to save battery I suppose. The H900N sounds surprisingly good for being bluetooth, it has capable Titanium coated drivers but is held back by the default Android settings.

I often use my mdr-1am2 and Sennheiser hd25 with an IFI Go Blu, it sounds great. Bluetooth at it's best is very good, using LDAC with a wireless DAC/amp sounds very similar to connecting the device by cable.

Thanks for mentioning that. BT these deays is far better than it used to be say five years ago!

Agree..
They'll get there eventually...
I was amazed at the gap currently, although BT has come a long way.
Just from memory, even my airpod Max fall quite short. It's the symbol sheen, note decay, bass overtones, timbre of the instrument. This is heard best in the richness in the lower piano keys..
Very impressive headphones, it's all there.
👍
Having tested them side by side, For me the closest is my DSR9BT but that thing is build from the groudn up as only digital headphone. They have vastly different tuning but both are on the same level IMO.
The Bass on the 1AM2 make msr7 and all its other version sound bass anemic, I like the DSR9BT best as it's most balanced out of the AT's current portable closed back generation.

anyone who has the 1am2 has not heard it in all it's glory until it's paired with a sony source, I've went through a good number of fairly good daps, and the wm1a made the 1am2 sound like no other.

If only I found this combo when I started audio I'd save so much money it's not even funny.

Another topic, are there any good pads alternatives that retain stock sound? I've the mdr 1am2 for over 5 years now i reckon, the pads are half dead.

Yep, DSR9bt's never got the love they deserve.. I picked up 3 during covid at Fry's. 2 for $150 (open box) and 1 at $200 new (unopened)... Kept one gave the others as gifts, they loved them!!
Very unique driver and custom digital amplifier.. No analogue input, but it would defeat the purpose.. 👍

Anyone got good luck fixing bad connection on the jack into the headphone?

After living with the 1AM2 for a while I start to prefer it over the DSR9BT I had before, which I prefer over the M70x that I also prefer over any versions of MSR7. 😂

There's much to offer in Sony's house tuning, I feel like they have gone so far since it first come about with Z7 and og 1A.
It's so perfect for modern pop music, Western, Jpop, Kpop, you name it.
I do feel the WH1000xM5 still have ways to go tho.

Hi, anyone recently bought those from Amazon in the EU? I was interested in them, but they are not available in my country, so I ordered a pair on amazon.de, where they were out of stock but possible to be ordered with amazon saying they "will let me know once they have an estimated delivery date". I am interested in knowing if anyone has a recent experience with ordering those on amazon in EU and how long it took for them to be shipped, thanks!
