Yet Another Stupid US Policy: No EMS/SAL/Air shipments from Japan to the USA if they're over 16 ounces (453 grams)

I am fairly annoyed at the government at the moment.

I'm prepping for a trip to Japan to spend time with the In-Laws and all that and there have been a lot of stressful bits of paperwork and logistics that needed sorting.  One such was how to ship back a lot of my girl's stuff from her parents house, as well as all the toys we were going to pick up while in Tokyo.  We figured we would mail back a lot of things and it would just make life easier for us.

Until Yemen.  Due to a thwarted bomb attempt that originated from Yemen, there is a strict watch on foreign shipments.  One of those countries affected is Japan.  Not that we will never get our items, but it's going to take weeks when it could have taken only a few days.

This is an infuriating extrapolation by the government.  Thankfully the great minds of the government have cautioned us endangered Americans that Japan is actually a terrorist cell for Yemen.

I hope no one is waiting for large packages from Japan and other affected countries.

Yay! Great to see another sancom user at head-fi!
On a serious note, I also think thats very foolish. I thought EMS and Air packages are scanned and checked to see if they're any dangerous goods inside them. So, why did the US banned shipments from Japan if they were able to thwart the bomb? Isnt that the point of scanning packages?

I agree about the extra precautions. We live in a different era where terroist will try anything  and everything. It may be an inconvenience but it is a necessity. While scanning packages will help we are also human and it needs to be double checked so there are no breaches. I believe everything coming into this country need to be scrutinized and I think most Americans want their families safe.

Because whenever anybody wants anything done they simple cite national security and the threat of terorrism and suddenly people are ok with it, no matter how stupid it is. I'm 90% sure there are 'terrorists' capable of sending bombs via the post in all sorts of countries.

I don't know if it helps you any, but it's not as if all shipments from Japan have been halted.
As long as a customer/business has an account/contract with JP Post, they will continue to send out their packages as normal.
I've checked with every company/service that I'm waiting for packages from, and every single one of them says this new announcement does not affect them.

That said, you could also try Fedex.

Sankaku is a totally awesome news site focusing on Japanese culture. Japan has an awesome attitude to nudity which isn't compatible with the rest of the world so unless you're into things which are awesome, you may find offense in Sankaku.

No one votes based on shipment restrictions on large international packages. Everyone votes based on successful terrorist attacks. For politicians, this is a no brainer. Not to mention that these restrictions are pretty sensible. The attempted Yemen bombing is the sort of attack that's easily scaled with devastating impact on global trade, and the restrictions are transparent to the vast majority of voters.

If by awesome you mean uptight and straitlaced, Japan's attitude is awesome. Otherwise, I'd avoid characterizing an entire society based on observations of a small subculture.

I'm definitely into awesome things and I didn't find that site content offensive at all, but I guess it wouldn't be OK to view it at work (I just visited it now, at home), thanks for the explanation!

The Japanese prohibit real sex in their live porn. The actors have to "tape up". Lol, we get the real deal. So there.
