I really don`t know much about it. I doubt the model number would even help you, as for the portable source i plan to get a ipod w/ headphone amp in a few months.

you underestimate us. What is the model please.

As far as what you have said so far... I think the 580s are not a good choice.

HD580/600 are a poor choice for portable usage, and with a mid-fi amp (which I assume the Pioneer is) you'll never tap into their full potential. Definitely look at something else... maybe the best Grado SR-xx model you can afford.

Good call bro! How about some nice Grado SR60s? You could have a little cash left over for a CMOY!

K271 = nono without an amp. You will not be happy for the few months w/o an amp. I'd go for the 555's, used dt250-80's maybe, or even the a700's.

They're really no less sturdy than most headphones (none of which are very sturdy at all, except maybe HP-1000s). If you treat 'em carefully they should last a long time. The cord can be a PITA, and the whole "pad" issue is too... other than that, my guess is the SR-225 would fit your musical tastes perfectly.

Sorry, never owned a pair of HD500s so I can't. I will say that I've seen no more posts around here about busted Grados than I have any other headphone.
