My old external HDD started making odd noises, so I replaced it last weekend. Restoring my backups took nearly 36 hours, but it was all there. Phew!

My external drive is a LaCie 2-TB.  I have two, for main and backup.
So far, so good....

My first external HDD was a LaCie. I hope they've implemented some shock protection since the model I bought. One fairly mild bump, and it stopped working.

Currently, my backup (and my old HDD) is a Toshiba, bought a few years ago. The replacement drive is a Samsung and while it is still the same capacity (2 terabytes), it is about half the size of the Toshiba in all three dimensions. Not much bigger than a pack of cards, in fact.

So I can slip 2 terabytes into my pocket, and there's extra 32 gigabytes hanging on my keyring on an inch-long flash drive. Technology marches on... I can remember the first time I had a whole megabyte of space on a PC!

This is quite a good 2015 take on 90's alt rock. Touch of grunge. Good rock album!

in hindsight I should had not only backed up to an ext. HDD, but also back-up the back-up to a second drive. I think that's what most servers do - have multiple back-ups. it can get expensive, but is the only way to go to keep data safe. I get it now.

I think the secret in having external/potable HDD lasting a few years is to never, ever move them when they're operating. Most people believe because they're "portable" they can be tossed around... and that when the damage happens, imo.
