And being semi-new to the head-fi world, I wanted to get an idea of what some of the high end headphones will cost nowadays. Granted, most of them are not in production anymore, therefore its hard for me to really gauge a market value. But anyways, please help with some of the headphones listed here in terms of their value:

Sony MDR-R10
Audio-Technica L3000
Audio-Technica W5000
Audio-Technica W2002
Grado PS-1
Grado HP-1000

I've been reading many reviews on the above headphones and before even considering which one I prefer, I will need to know if I can afford them... Right now I can dish out around $1,500. But of course, I gotta wait until someone sells it here on the FS forum or audiogone or ebay. Thanks in advance for the info.

Not sure if this will be accurate:

Sony MDR-R10 (slightly more than 2000 pairs produced): $4000 to $6000 ($4000 for an older pairs and $6000 for a new pair) assuming they are in very good to mint conditions. An O.K. condition ones can probably be had for less than that.
Audio-Technica L3000 (500 pairs limited edition run): More than $1800 (most likely above 2000 dollars)
Audio-Technica W5000: Below $800
Audio-Technica W2002 (800 pairs limited edition run to celebrate AT's 40th anniversary): Around $1300 dollars
Grado PS-1: More than $1700 (The last I saw went for around $1800)
Grado HP-1000: Around $1200 to $1600

I also want to add that some of these headphones are more limited than another and if you might can find them cheaper in e-bay and foreigh auction sites.

Wow, 6k for the Sony MDR-R10... i could buy a car with that kind of money! thanks for the figures. i'll keep that in mind next time someone sells them.

The 6k for the R10s was based on a NOS 2002 model one (I've talked to a member here, and he paid that much for his pair). The older model production run will be more than 3.7k. One should expect to pay premium amount for any R10. Audioadvancement's price is also in that range.

R10s go for way less in Japan. $6k for one is ridiculous.

Yes....that is rediculous...I agree totally. But I have talked to one member who has purchased one for $6.5k, but that pair was a new old stock and was made in 2002. One went for over 4.5k recently on headfi.

i don't know...i'm kinda wary about these kinds of threads b/c it sort of becomes "fact" in a way that i think is bad for the community. someone puts up a ridiculous asking price on a set of headphones and refers to this thread as "proof." dangerous, IMO. just my 2 cents.

Well let's face it...the market is driven by supply and demand and I don't think it is anything wrong as I meant to be informative and respond to the question. However, I don't mind editing my post if you think my respond to this thread will inflate the price of these headphone. FYI, every L3000 or R10 owner probably already know how much their headphones are worth.

I've been here long enough to see a pair of R10 went for 1500 dollars at the dawn of headfi and now they are commanding over 4k. Same can be said with the Baby O combo. Two years ago, I purchased a minty Baby O combo for less than $900 shipped from Australia and currently they are about 2k in the sell/trade forum. Remember when the PS-1 was retailed for 1.4k when they first released and now they are sold for almost 2K in the used market. Same can be said with the HP-1000s. And when seller is taking offers, he probably want top dollars from his headphone anyway.

Glad to learn that some of my favorite headphones keep going up in value. Who needs an investment portfolio anyway?

Yes, I would say so, but trust me...if you are doing very well financially (and I don't)....6.5k won't break his bank.

Yep...I wish I know of this earlier. I really want to give the HE-60 another chance but they are too expensive right now (factoring a good amp for them).
