Valab NOS DAC - subjective listening and modifications

I guess the WAF Factor doesn't take place here
I'm sorry but I don't want to make my room completely ugly, only a bit :p

If the sound was anything less than sublime then the WAF factor would indeed be a problem

All of the Valab DAC Owners that are using foorbar2k on Windows 7, what are your settings and which output / dsp plugins are you using?

Ok there is endless discussion about internal mods but it seems no1 mentions if this Valab TDA1543 improves by using a digital transport like a USB to SPDIF converter etc.  Why is this?  Is it that the DAC already has a very low jitter USB receiver?

You can see that alot of people here are using the DIR9001 with the coaxial input so they are using a USB -> Coaxial. A good converter is the M2tech which does improve the sound over the Valab USB.

Cool.  What about some1 like me who does not have the DIR9001 mod... would it still make a difference to add a digital transport instead of using directly the USB input to connect to a PC.
I've got the Lundahl 1574 transformer  on the coaxial input (if that makes any difference)

If I'm correct; The DIR9001 Mod is the Lundahl 1574 Trasnformer on the coaxial input.
By the way, where do you get the Lundahl 1574 from?

There was discussion about external converters early on in the Chameleon and Valab threads. At least 2 owners got very good results from the Pacecar. Since then there has been an explosion of these devices.

I tried the Musiland 01 usd, although its works, improves resolution and bass etc, it also, to my ears, presents a synthetic experience, particularly noticeable on these NOS dacs.

At the moment I get great results with an adum isolator, (Ultravox from Diyparadise). Later I am looking forward to trying a Jkenny modified Hiface.

On another topic, users of the DC-30W, I urge you to follow LosNir and change those caps. I am getting great results, sound is opening out even more and the bass seems deeper with more information present. The whole presentation is more passionate.

That shows the extent of my knowledge on these things :)
I got the DAC from some1 else on another forum who had done some upgrades including:

Vcap Oils 3.3uF caps x 2 - $US112
Sonicap Platinums .22uF caps x 2 - $US90
Caddock Resistors x 4 - $US28
Lundahl 1574 transformer x 1 (on coaxial input) - US$25
Various Blackgate FK caps x 15 $US80

Hey I ordered an adum isolator last week - I am waiting for it to come from Denmark.  Its good to hear you are getting good results from it.

On a side note... do I need any special type of coaxial cable due to the Lundahl 1574  transformer?  i read on here a little confusion about 110ohms vs 75ohms which of course went right over my head lol.

This is the DIR9001 mod. You lift one leg of the chip and power it with a 3.5 v.

Search through the threads to find the details. I never tried it myself.

Wood, thanks for the info - I'll look it up.
By the way, I want to buy the Lundahl 1574 Pulse Transformer but can't find anywhere a place who will ship to Israel.
Who can do me a favor and sell me one? Thanks.

This is interesting to me as I have the DC-30W.  What caps should I get for it?
