In_the_absence_of_truth.jpg

An amazing album in its own right but contextually not as innovative as:
Ashes_Against_The_Grain.jpg

I second the Donald Fagen reccomendation as well. I am a humongous Tool fan, but 10,000 days is THE MOST GROSSLY OVERRATED ALBUM of the year.

What kind of music is Isis? That has gotten more that just one or two recommendations, and I wonder if I'd like it...

Just wanted to thank Vic for starting this best of thread early -- and for everybody posting up their thoughts -- because I have picked up some great records based on these lists. Just from Christmas presents I received by request or bought for myself, I can attribute the following to this list:

Joanna Newsome, Ys (double LP)
Camille, Le Fil (CD)
Grizzly Bear, Yellow House (double LP with free CD)
Regina Spektor, Begin to Hope (CD)
Lacuna Coil, Karmacode (CD for 50 cents at Tower Records closing sale)

I also got Tom Waits, Orphans and Beatles, Love but I would have gotten those anyway.

After I get more familiar with all of this music, I am going to post up a final personal best of list for 2006. Then, we get to move on to a whole new year!

Cheers, and thanks again Vic!

I know it's pedantic, but this was first released in May 2004.

Hi Al,
glad to hear you are enjoying Camille and Regina Spektor, which ATM are at the top of my 2006 list (although apparently Camille album was released in the US in 2005 and in the UK in 2006). I also saw both of them live and they were fantastic shows (I am going to see Regina again in February).

IMO Camille did not get the attention deserved in the US, as often is the case with albums in languges other than English. I do understand as in this CD the lyrics are important to appreciate the general mood (and they are very good indeed). Still this CD blends the best of indie with French chanson, African influence and Parisian hip pop; all the songs are very strong and she has a fantastic voice and tons of energy. The production of the album is also excellent and makes for a very exciting listening experience.
"Begin to hope" is another gem and Regina Spektor another great performer blending indie soft rock, jazz, vaudeville and a few Russian influences with a great sense of humor.

Another album that you should check out before finalising your list is M. Ward "Potst war": I am sure you would like it.

Can't wait to see your list.
Happy new year,
Vic

2006 is the year I rediscovered my love for music. Only recently I have been active again in buying CDs. So I can't exactly point out which would be my Fav for 2006 - all of them I guess.

But one that I trully enjoy right now is Sonic Youth's Rather Ripped and that's released in Feb 2006

I have listened to Le Fil and Begin to Hope several times in the last few days. My French is good enough to follow the gist of most of Camille's songs. Given that I didn't know of her in 2005--for the reasons you state--I am keeping her on my list for 2006.

Way back on p.3 of this thread (post 41 or so) I had M. Ward on my quick top 10 of that moment. He is still up there and I am hoping to see him in February.

I have to listen to The Boxing Mirror, which I got for my wife and I have the Guillemots last album but not the new one. I also need to find Van Occupanther before finalizing my list. More "work" to be done.

Abientot. Ciao. Later.
