This basically, to me, straddles the line between modern creative and "classy dinner jazz". It is good, but nothing about it really moved me. I have more of this drummer's output to get to. A more informed review: https://ecmreviews.com/2014/04/23/playground/

Try Neighborhood if you haven't already, from 2005.

Thanks Bob, I will: it's one I ordered. I started with the above because it was an AMG (All Music Guide) album pick...which they often get right, but often I can quibble with their picks with groups/artists I know well.
And thanks for posting this too: good stuff!

ECM covers are great Bob! Really artistic and distinctive: you can often guess an unknown album filed under "jazz" is an ECM release from a glance at the cover before you even see the trademark "ECM" letters on it!
I have a Kit Downes album (A Short Diary) but have yet to listen to it.
I didn't know Surman had a new release out! So many albums, so little time.
Beautiful sax and piano playing (with bass accompaniment).

Great line up on this one, and "odd" music, even for ECM, which rewards many listens.

Excellent folk jazz featuring the Kantele. Some tracks have vocals, which I generally dislike in jazz (besides some classic singers), but overall a unique and enjoyable album.

Same line up as the Bass Desires release posted above, but not quite as good imo. Still very worthwhile however.
I'm going on a run through my Jarrett discography; he of course has many releases on the ECM label, so I'll be posting a lot of his ECM albums in here as I go through them.
This one, btw, is fantastic (first listen!).
