hey guys, not sure if this thread is still live, but...

If I were to listen mainly from my PC with an average at best sound card, and also my iPhone 3G, would I be better off getting the HFI 2200's or the PRO 2500's?
And also if I were to buy the E9 and E7 Fiio amps, which would be better?

Thanks.

Also, how do they compare to the Sennheiser HD650's?

Not the Pro2500.  Amp recommended for them.

E9 or E11

Haven't heard the 650.

get the 2200.. the 2500 is very picky of the amp and the source.. you need a full setup that have good synergy,, not just an amp that have enough power..

i haven't heard E9,, but i think it will be enough to drive the 2200..

I see, thanks for that.

I can get them both for the same price, so I might go for the 2500, taking a bit of a risk perhaps but oh well!

i still think you get the 2200,, even if the 2500 price is similar.. because the 2500 is not an "easy" cans,, its a love it or hate it cans and will not sound good out of any setup.. the 2200 will be more easy going..

but its all up to you then..

hmm yeah again thanks for your help. I have found someone near me who has the 2200's and I'm going to borrow them to try with my e9.
If I like it I will get the 2200's, if I'm not satisfied, ill go for the 2500's. I have heard a few people who have had success pairing the 2500 with e9's so I will see :)

Okay so I have decided what i want down to the HFi 2400.
But when I look at amazon... They have it for $275. And then I see the HFi 2200... which is like $180. Are these 2 phones the same thing with one being just newer than the other?
The same applies to the PRO 2900 and the PRO 2500 which is like $500 and $250 respectively. Are these 2 phones the same as well?
I can have some serious bang for the buck if the PRO 2500 is the same as the updated 2900.
Anyone knows anything about this? There isn't much info out there.

When I say "same" I mean it in terms of sound quality not the physical appearance.

Oh and do you think the Ibasso D4 portable amp can drive the supposedly hard PRO 2500 and the 2900?

An Ultrasone rep said the hfi 2900 and hfi 2200 are identical except for cosmetics. I quite prefer the hfi 2200 cosmetics :). The pro 2900 has thicker earpads than the pro 2500. not sure if the drivers are different. Frequency response are different, at least measured different, which could be due to different measurements but same drivers, or different drivers.

the pro 2500 is the open version of the pro 750 which is still in production.. while the pro 2900 is the open pro 900.. i don't think the pro 2500 and pro 2900 will sound the same,, some similarity maybe because of the same housing design and speaker plating..

for the pro 2500 you need a good desktop amp,, even if it has small impedance but its hard to drive properly,, surely the 2500 will sound loud out of portable amp,, but it really benefit a lot from a better desktop amp,, you will get better control, authority, and refinement from a good desktop amp..

Thank you for the information. So it would be better to purchase the cheaper 2200 over the more expensive 2400 because they are pretty much the same headphones right? And because I only have a portable amp I guess I should stay away from the higher end PRO 2500 and the PRO 2900.

Let me get this straight, the 2900 is the same as the 2200, and the 2900 is an open version of the 900? Seeing as the cheapest 900 is around $320, that would be a great deal as the 2200 goes for $180

1. I could be mistaken, but I don't believe there is such a thing as an HFI-2900. There is the current HFI-2400, and its predecessor the HFI-2200. Both of these use the gold-plated driver & both have a rather warm sound signature.

2. The PRO2900 shares a titanium driver with the PRO750/PRO2500/PRO900/Edition10. Each of these have their own, slightly different sound, but share extended FR & detail (far more than the HFI-2200 & 2400's)

I think he meant that the HFi 2400 was identical to the HFi 2200. The PRO 2900 is DEFINITELY NOT identical to the lower end HFi 2400. I was just wondering if the PRO 2500 and the 2900 were practically the same... just like how the HFi 2400 and the HFi 2200 are the same.
