I was actually skeptical when I bought mine. However, after spending some real time I don't think I'll ever go back to non-customs. Were they expensive? Yes. However, the sound is amazing. The amount of sound I was missing is astounding. I think part of it is due how much better the sound from a good custom is but also to the fact that these things block out so much noise!
I ride the SF muni trains every day to and from work. With my IEMs in I can barely hear the train. I don't mean, "Oh, with music playing..." I usually listen to podcasts on my commute. And in between the talk, in the empty space, I can barely hear the train. With music I can't hear the train at all.
