This headphone is an oddball. Upon receiving it, I have an initial impression of a typically veiled Sennheiser, which is totally not my preferred sound signature
.
I decided to swap out the soft, squishy stock pads with a pair of velour ear pads that come with my HyperX Cloud headset. These ear pads are identical to the Takstar HI2050 ear pads.
(Note: The headband faux leather has worn out quite a bit so I cut it off and add a piece of plastic file folder. Looks funny but it's actually comfortable for my head. I also glued the ear caps since they have become quite loose and can fall off anytime.
And now what we have here is a super bright Grado, much much brighter than my Grado SR325is (with L cushions). It reminds me of the Grado SR125i (with L cushions): a thin sounding headphone, light bass and an elevated, grainy treble response. Urgh, too painful to the ears! This is where the awesome Equalizer APO comes in to save the day yet again. I make a quick and dirty eq like this:
And voilà! The impactful bass has come back, this time it fortunately doesn't overshadow other frequencies. Upper midrange and treble have been tamed quite nicely, although there's still a small hint of a metallic sound. I definitely to further adjust the eq to achieve a more refined sound. But even in the current state the MH463 is quite something.
Heck I think I even prefer it to my Beyerdynamic DT880 and Grado Sr325is. Edit: Upon more critical listening, the Beyer and Grado still have the upper hand. The Somic in comparision has a more recessed and fuzzy midrange.
