The Fiio X5 Thread

British humour, and irony!

Those old enough to have played LPs, cassettes, and minidiscs, we thought it so great to be able to take an album out with you. Then CDs you didn't even need to remove and change sides. Now we are so spoilt that 5000 tracks isn't enough :)

Yeah, I remember back in the day, the early 80s reading how one day one could fit say, all of Bach on one small module. Now it isn't such a big idea and can actually be done!

SD Card Preference? Performance?

Any comments on preferred SD cards with X5?  Max performance threshold?  i.e. Don't bother paying more for XXXX

Sweet spot right now looks like 2x Sandisk Ultra 64gb? And wait for inevitable price drop and firmware update to support 2x 128gb?

I have been using Sandisk 128GB cards since they were first available with no issues and no concern that something better may exist. They work great.

I used a 64GB and a 128GB Samsung in my X5. No problems.

It's cheaper still to buy nothing. I like to get the most storage I can for each available slot. You like to save money. Each of us can be happy doing different things. But only one of us is right.

If I remember right, the blue note comes with lots of CDs of some music. I am not into that type of music, so I did not paid much attention, but I understood that the special editions of those CDs are actually worth the trouble for big fans of the music.

It is overpriced, no matter how you look at it.

Now that Fiio x7 is coming out, it might make a competition for other expensive DAPs. I can't wait to hear one.

I looked it up, 75 albums of artists I don't know. Jazz, apparently. I suppose maybe some of the music is rare to find, but €67 per album is a bit rich, nonetheless.

The X7 looks interesting, though I prefer actual buttons over touch screens. At least for a DAP.

Typically, more storage is cheaper per GB than cards (or hard drives, for that matter) with less storage. Except perhaps the highest / newest storage densities, which can be more expensive per GB. So you can get both by getting the second highest storage density. At least, that is what I can see of the prices right now, but where I'm looking, the 128 GB micro SD is not especially expensive (depends also on the read/write speeds, of course).

Not that I'd really want that much music on my DAP at all times, I'm still quite satisfied with just a 32 GB card.

I like having a large number of choices. I know there are many files on my X5 I will probably never get around to hearing. But If I want to hear something and I reach for it and it's there, the cost of the memory card means nothing to me. Nothing at all. I bought mine when they were $120. I bought 3 at that price. Now I see them for $59 and I don't care even a little bit.

I remember paying $800 for a 160 mb (that's megabyte, not GB or TB). It was a full height Wren III SCSI drive and it took 2 minutes to spin up. I thought I stole it for $800. I was so pleased. The fact that I have three 128GB cards that I could stick in my nose amazes and amuses me.

I am also pleased that 32 GB does it for you. Yes sir.

I am sad that the upcoming X7 only has one slot. bah.

Amazon UK are currently selling Samsung 64 GB SD cards for £17.25 and 128 GB at £50.41.

It actually costs nothing to not have a player .... But go figure. Do the math as US guys say!!

Here it is for you ......

I currently have 7 X 64 GB cards so they cost £120.75
Same amount of music on 128 GB = £151.23 plus another 64 GB = £168.48

That's a difference of £47.73

I'm sure you're happy with the convenience of not having to switch cards.

That difference could buy another two, (nearly three) 64 GB cards. However, it looks as though you aren't bothered by how much you're paying for your cards from the post above.

What do you mean by only one of us is right? What an odd thing to say. I would have thought it's just a different attitude.
