The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Hello,
Someone knows if there's differences between the standard dt880 and the black edition?
The packaging of the BE edition says that has a driver made of special materials and someone that I know has said to me that these are truly amazing.

What materials does it say have been used?

Sry wasn't the driver:
Specially designed housings and an improved system equalisation turn this "remake" of the Studio Classic DT880 into an ideal studio monitoring headphone, with analytical qualities.

I own a DT 880 Black, but honestly not sure if it differs from the original one as I haven't heard them side to side. The comfort is different and it does have different pads so wouldn't be surprised if it sounds a bit different.

So I should prefer the standard one, as it cost 115€ while the black edition is 185€.
Last thing, I should pair them to an LG v30 that it has the Sabre 9218p with 2.1Vp..... The one with 80 of impedance or the 250 one?

is dt880/dt990 a sidegrade from HD600?

In the case of the DT880, kind of, at least IMO. The way I'd put it is that while not radically different from each other, they're somewhat the antidote for one another. If you feel the HD 600 is a bit too polite and mid-centric, the DT880 has more treble and better bass extension while not having quite as upfront a midrange. Similarly, for those who find the DT880 too strong in the treble, the HD 600 is comfortably more subdued in this range, though with a noticeable bump (especially in direct comparison to the DT880) in the upper midrange/lower treble range that brings forward midrange elements in the mix. Both have tunings that are interpretations of neutral, and while I personally feel the HD 600 is closer (and personally enjoy listening to it more), the DT880 makes a very nice account of itself.

That all said, if you have one of the two and are happy with it, I would say the other isn't necessary unless you're curious how it renders things differently (especially if you find an amazing deal on it).

Ok thanks I’d test before buying

I have never heard the HD600. I have to admit, I have not used my DT880 much since getting the Amiron. I have only used it a bit in the spare tv room.

The HD 600 is not that different than the HD HD 650, it’s a bit more forward in the mids and has a bit less bass than the HD 650, the HD 650 has more linear and honestly better mids than the HD 600, the main drawback of the HD 650 is it can be a bit too polite at times. My main complaint about the HD 600(as well as the HD 660 S) is it can be a bit overly forward in the mids making it sound congested at times and on certain systems, whereas the HD 650 never sounds congested to my ears. I have the DT 880 - 250 Ohm and Amiron myself, I’ll take the Amiron over it as well, it’s a definite upgrade fidelity wise. If there is anything I would change about the DT 880 it would be a fuller midrange and slightly smoother highs. I do remember the 600 Ohm sounding fuller and smoother, I will have to compare mine to my friends and see if that is actually the case.

I have never heard an HD650 either. I have a Sennheiser HD598SE and an HD580 (3rd or 4th generation). I like them both, but my one true Sennheiser love was my old HD480 from the 90's (original not MKII)

Are the Amiron sidegrades too?

It's like 3x the price of 880

Ah, having the HD 580 you have an idea of the HD 6xx family sound. Honestly in some ways the older Senns sound is better, I’ve owned older Senns and they have a special something to them that I don’t hear in the newer ones. It’s similar with older Beyers, I like the original/vintage versions DT 880 and DT 990 more than the current iteration.

is dt880/dt990 a sidegrade from HD600?

Some would argue a DT990 is a downgrade from a HD600. Comparing the DT880 to the HD600, the DT880 is brighter whereas the HD600 is more tonally balanced. The HD600 has more prominent bass and in general is more euphonic. The DT880 in contrast is not very euphonic and has a cold character that many would dislike in a headphone, bass extension is good for a dynamic. The midrange is wonderful on both. The DT880 has a slightly bigger soundstage. Overall sound quality levels are similar, but most will prefer the HD600. The DT880 comes in different impedances 32/250/600 ohm whereas the HD600 is 300ohm

DT880 600 Ohm has a better extended and better controlled base comparing to HD600
