Can anyone suggest a speaker setup that'll please a basshead but won't drown out the rest of the song?  I'm looking for a simple setup so I can plug it up to my TV and sometimes my laptop.

This is a headphones forum... so you probably won't get much help here... but I have an HSU Research VTF-3 subwoofer, and I could not be happier.  It's the best sub for the money.  They sell package deals with full sets of speakers too... so here are their packages that come with a VTF-3: http://hsuresearch.com/products/hybrid3pkg.html

This is the monster sub of monster subs: http://hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-15h.html

I was hoping someone would have a bit of knowledge since this is the only audiophile forum I'm aware of :p guess I need to do a lot more Googling.

.............................yea that price point isn't exactly college-friendly lol.  I should've said something about a price range at the beginning.

Couldn't agree more.  I got the value pack for the small room I have and the 8 inch sounds dang good.  I can't imagine how good the VTF-3 sounds.

Oh, back to your "off topic" question... I got one of these for my 18-year-old daughter, and I have to say it sounds amazing for it's size... and it would be REALLY dorm-friendly: Altec Lansing iMT810

It's not exactly designed to hook up to a TV or laptop, but it does have two audio inputs in addtion to the iPhone/iPod doc, so it could work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrIqpwsaoZg

Why is everyone doing this disgusting Beats look now? Good thing Yamaha didn't screw it up so much.

I hope Monster/Beats don't start suing everyone else à la Apple for design infringement.

Any1 actually knows ANYTHING about the sound of the Yamaha lol. I only know their new iem EHS-100 I think it was is very impressive at its price point. My concern is more on the build quality side though, looks like they'd snap quite easily...

Must admit it looks like a hybrid of Beats Studios & the new Denon Music Maniac line....

According to Yamaha, the over-the-ear PRO500 uses 'premium drivers'. The headphones are available in blue and black.

The PRO500 and PRO400 sport an over-ear design, while the PRO300 is an on-ear headphones The highest-end PRO500 in particular uses 50mm drivers with neodymium magnets, and the earcups are clad in aluminum alloy. Two detachable, flat headphone cables are provided for the PRO500 and PRO400: a 1.2m one that has an in-line remote/mic, and a 3m one that’s meant for home use. For the PRO300, the cable isn’t detachable.

Furthermore, the headphones can be folded to aid portability. The PRO500 and PRO400 come with a semi-rigid case, while the PRO300 has a soft carrying case.

The HPH-PRO500, PRO400, and PRO300 are priced at US$400 (~S$498), US$300 (~S$374), and US$200 (~S$249) respectively.

Reading their site where you can find wall of text about it I get the impressions they are talking like it would be the supermegaduper headphone (which to me usually gives bad impressions) http://europe.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/headphones/hph-pro500_w/

At the same time their description is quite funny and contradicting, at least on the features tab:

Yamaha knows better than anyone how to make your music sound its absolute best. Now you can enjoy the Studio Sound experience anywhere you go. PRO Series headphones go beyond just “powerful bass” to authentically reproduce any style of music.

I don't know about you but I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable to blow $400 on a pair of these without being able to test or read an experienced fellow headphone enthusiast's thoughts.

Thanks for the suggestions :D

Since a few headphones tend to copy the design of Beats, it's almost like they're the Apple of their industry; build something cheap and sell it with a high profit margin thanks to marketing.

Harmon Kardon Soundsticks- very cool looking, amazing sound, goes loud without distortion and great desktop subwoofer with variable bass.

I don't know why so many companies are aping the design of the Beats cans. The hard carrying case is even quite similar to what you get a Beats Studio, for example. I hate this look, to be honest. At least Denon tried to differentiate their design; for the Yamaha can, if you took away the tuning forks, and replaced it with the big "b", I think no one would think it wasn't a Dr Dre can.

Many compared to the new Denon to Beats.  I agree with you and think the Denon D600 is actually sleek and distinctive, bearing little resemblance to Beats.  These Yamahas really look like Beats.  There appears to be a disconnect with the lavish marketing description of their sound and their apparently unoriginal and fragile design.  When I see the build, I can't help but be skeptical about the sound (i.e. Denon D400)  I will give the Pro 500 points for aluminum cups.  Maybe we will get lucky and they put everything into the sound?  Yamaha's marketing description is curiously similar to what many expect of the M-100.

"PRO Series headphones go beyond just "powerful bass" to authentically reproduce any style of music. From Classic Rock to Hip-Hop, from Latin Jazz to Delta Blues, the PRO Series brings all your music to life. "

Sounds like "Modophile" to me....
