OK, after doing some reading about the K701 I became intrigued by the notion that an earpad swap could increase bass output.

It will make the whole headphone warmer, not just increase the bass.

Q701           Capsule DKK45 2400Z00080 (older 2400Z00070 but specially selected)
K702           Capsule DKK45 2400Z00080 (older 2400Z00070 but specially selected)
K702 Anniversary  Capsule DKK45  2400Z00080
K712 Pro      Capsule DKK45  (other selected than for K702 - this information I got, service manual are not available today - I think coming soon)

Service manuals
K702 and K702-65    http://www.akg.com/K702-827.html?pid=1209
K712    http://www.akg.com/K712+PRO-827.html?pid=1408 (look once in a while in downloads)

Looks like they finished the DKK45 2400Z0007 on the K701models, and after the K702 was releaseed they start using the DKK45 2400Z00080 (K702 driver ) on the K701 new models (after 2008). If you guys going back in time and read headfi post of members compering between the first K702 and the 2006 K701 you'll find the differences right there in their testimonies.

Here you can see the main differences,

Based on what I have read, and what I just experienced, I don't think I'll be upgrading my 701s just yet.

There isn't a huge difference in sound between the newer K701 and K702 65AE

The only difference is the bass output. I'm not sure how "the whole headphone" can sound warmer.

Actually, it clearly states that they used "older 2400Z00070 but specially selected" on both the Q701 and K702. . .just saying.

K701 drivers should = K702 drivers though.... Same with the Q701. The only question really is, were they changed on the Annie? Did that carry over to the K712?

Or are the differences in sound down to the pads alone?

No, there are some other options. You see the six slits around the driver, they could be open, closed and damping material mounted. And it gives some other places on which damping material could be fitted.

That's good information. Thank you, I hadn't thought of that. Clearly I'm not a headphone designer :D

i'm completely confused by what you just said. i can see the 6 slots, they are for securing the pads, what does it have to do with damping? and how do molded parts "open" "close" or even do "damping"???

There are only 4 slots for securing the pads. I marked them red in the picture. The rest of the holes is used for tuning the headphone. This was very obvious with k501 and all the different versions and bass levels.

So I'm looking for a confirmation. it hasn't mentioned several times the Q701 and the K 702 with the Annie pads sounds exactly the same as the Annie.

is this accurate?

Again I'm looking for a solid confirmation.
If they don't, then I'm just going to buy the Annie.

Hey guys. I heard from my headphone guy that the K712 is limited to 500 pairs. Hurry and get them while you can!
They also use new TempurPedic foam so that there is now even more bass than the K702 65th Anniversary.
Of course I was not supposed to tell anyone! My measurements report a 20db increase at 5hz.
