SONY NW-ZX2

I'm going to pick a zx2 up in Tokyo in a few weeks. Would yodobashi or Fuji avic have better price? Last year I got my all k812 from Fuji avic for much cheaper.

Also which case would you recommend? Oem Sony, dignis or ray out?

I can't comment on Fuji Avic, but you can consider Bic camera in Shinjuku, just before I left japan in june, the price was reduced from 119880yen to 114880yen, this is the tax free price, but not too sure if that is only temporary.

If you go to bic camera facebook site, you can download a coupon for a extra 6% for unlimited use on top of the tax free price, or you can get one of those tourist 1,2 or 3 days metro tickets for metro use, from softmap or bic camera for a extra 7% for unlimited use just by showing it before the purchase (do check if this offer is still available).

If you intend to get the Sony pure sound micro sdxc, the same shop has them the cheapest at 13500yen, but they didn't have stock during my purchase, I got it from yodobashi at akihabara which was a few hundred yen more.

The digital out cube stand at yodobashi in akihabara is the cheapest I've seen if you intend to buy it.

Do note that all the Bic Camera shops have different prices, so if you have time, do check around.

Thanks for the tips.  I'll check out the Facebook site for that extra discount. I always thought all the bics and yodobashi would have the same price.  Didn't know they would have differences.

first time posting...long time lurker. please be gentle. :)

been looking for a dedicated player for a while after my ipod classics bit the dust. have no interest in the touch so apple has been removed from the equation. my entire library has been ripped into 'cd quality' flac files for some time for squeezebox playback. i also have some hi-res stuff taken from floyd sets i purchased.

i guess my questions are these:

1. is there a discernible difference between the u.s. version vs the japanese? plenty of sellers would have you think so given the way they label it.

2. in hoping to keep this as portable as possible, i would like to exclude a separate portable amp (for now). as far as efficiently driven portable headphones are concerned, do you think something like the senn's momentum 2.0 over ear model would be a good match for the z2? suggestions?

any insight is greatly appreciated.

thanks.

1/ Japan version has no max volume limit, doesn't matter if you disable the sound enhancement app or not. Warranty will be in Japan only, it means that you have to ship your device back to the seller with the Japanese warranty card, you bite the fees from round trip shipping. They will determine whether the guarantee works performed would be free or charges, and how much. I personally purchased my ZX2 from Japan, and has no problem so far :). Within 30 days if there was any found defect, you can return for free.....exclude shipping cost.

2/ I can drive IM-04, porta-pro (100 ohms), MDR-Z7 at no problems. It power is adequate for most of the modern headphones or IEMS, I would say those momentum would not be a problem.

:) oh, and FYI even my MDR-Z7 is the Japan version....cheaper lol, and you can always trust the Japanese, doesn't matter if it is a seller or a brand.

thanks for the prompt response.

that certainly is a difference worth mentioning.

good info all around! would be interested in hearing feedback from anyone who has had experience with momentum 2.0's (wired) and the zx2.

Welcome to head-fi, slainte! :)

Before I go on answering your questions, I want to apologise on behalf of all members here for the effects this place has on your wallet.

Don't say that you weren't told!

1) The volume of the Japanese model is not capped as opposed to the European model. I've never heard that the U.S. Walkmen are volume capped. But others are better qualified to answer this question.

2) The ZX2 is lacking power to drive high-impedance headphones such as the MDR-Z7 or the HD-800. Anything above 60-70 ohms will not be driven properly by the ZX2. I happen to own the Momentum 2.0 (over ear) and can assure you that it has no problems whatsoever driving the M2 as the M2 are not very demanding headphones.

You can look forward to a great combination if you opt for the ZX2 and the M2. Here's some audiophile porn for you:

haha...that's great! i can hear that sweet, sweet 70s porn music in the background when i look at that pic. :)

thanks for the input. that sure does look like a fine setup.

you're not joking about the hurt this stuff can put on one's wallet. started pricing in the mdr-27s and a pha-3 amp into the mix for craps and giggles and that became immediately apparent.

any recommendations in regards to sellers?

My MDR-Z7 directly driven are better than my amplifier Yamaha RX-V450. Weird isn't it ? It gets similar on the loudness level, only different sound signature. Thinner and colder on RXV450, but warmer and thicker on ZX2. In my personal opinion, in order to really drive any headphones for a meaty spectrums and punchy bass, the device have to be more than capable of driving the headphones, or speakers.

Also, I love ZX2+Z7 combination so so much :D. I am going to burn another hole in my wallet for a balanced TRRS cables....sigh....poisonous hobby.

From Amazon, PremiumJapan is very well reputation by headfi members, and personally get a vote from me :D

Anyone you find trustworthy to buy from

(I got both items the ZX2 and the M2 from amazon)

PriceJapan, too, is a reputable seller. Depending on your location, the weak Yen might make an import very attractive.

Btw, I replaced the stock cable with an aftermarket cable. So this beautiful silver cable is not among the accessories when you get your M2.

I'd do the same if I had the Z7 and the PHA-3. It sounds so ridiculous that one has to to splash out $200 on a cable to get the most out of these headphones, but apparently it really does make a tremendous difference.

In the end I chose to invest in a pair of true flagship headphones and a portable tube amplifier. I hope my signifcant other will never find out...

can't believe i did it, but i've taken the plunge. delivery set for this monday....

Congratulation ! Remember to burn it in, you can read it when first time turning it on. Sony recommend 100 hours ? I see it stopped changing at 250 hours mark. It would sound meezzzhhhh out of the box. I recommend listening to it while burning in, and witness the changes/transformations for yourself. A privillage inky with brand spanking new device.

I am sure you will love it
