I've been reading threads on the Sony NW-HD5 and I've read that it doesn't have a true lineout. Is this bad, cause I'm not sure what it exactly means? Does it not benefit as much from an amp compared to an I-pod?

I agree it's a very good lineout. I think the inbuilt DAC makes the sound a touch digital/tizzy in nature but it synergises well with so many portable amps, especially the RSA models.

really? i actually think it sounds more analog-like compared to others.

As in all things audio, everything is comparative. My main portable source is an iRiver H140, which is definitely a better lineout IMHO (though it obviously doesn't have the advantages of the NW-HD5's size, HDD protection, etc).
