Listening to this as I type this post through the CD900st and Apogee Duet 2.  It's really amazing how wonderful Nat's voice is.

This one is really nice too.

I've been looking for a deal on the cd900st for the longest time.  If you don't mind me asking, where did you purchase yours from?

oh, and you can purchase replacement earpads here: http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Compatable-MDR-7506-MDR-CD900ST-MDR-V600/dp/B004SHFPK6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325468981&sr=8-1

You can get them from Amazon Japan or through this authorized custom seller.  You can build your own CD900st.

The ear pad link you provided may NOT be a Sony original part.  The CD900st ear pads are NOT the same thickness as the V6 or 7506.

ooh.. thanks for the info!  i'm tempted to go the custom route, but I'd probably be happy enough with non-custom.  ebay has them for 250 shipped to america which is a pretty ok deal.  i heard they go for around 180 in japan, but considering how weak the USD is, it probably now translates to 250.

Like joelpearce I have mixed feelings with the 900ST. It definitely has its own strength but I found them to be boring sometimes. Also the pads are too shallow with my ears, that despite it having very good resolution of details the protrait of musical instruments seem smeared together. With replacement pads like Pearstone such was resolved, the soundstage is pushed further apart but the the sound became thinner, tonality and balance suffer a little too. It's a trade off rather than unilateral improvement for me.

Compared to the KRK 8400, the 900ST definitely has higher resolution and timbre. If we use picture as analogue the musical protrait of the 900ST is painted with finer pigment. The 900ST is also easier to drive. However the 8400 is not far behind and actually is more lively sounding of the two with more involving PRAT.

I just put on a pair of NEW Sony OEM MDR-V6 ear pads on the CD900st to try.  I like the Pearstone better in terms of sound.  It's just a bit tighter in the bass area.
