I guess some people think open headphones make a more open soundstage and closed ones...well you get my point. And some others feel that a headphone should make a great wide soundstage with a close-mic'd multi-tracked pop recording. If it ain't there to begin with, it should not be there during playback. If it does, it's exaggerated and distorted. A recording of an orchestra in a large venue with minimal miking should sound spacious using any headphone or loudspeaker.

Open phones are more diffuse, hence the auditory "appearance" of space (not actual recording space). A good closed phone, with closely matched drivers and balanced overall response, can offer a better view of player interaction. That is determined by the Audio engineer and HIS level matching (of course). In particular the simple mic'd recordings (again IMO).

Really? If you don't mind, can you post a few photos of the new ear cups? I actually like the slight curvature of the metal faceplates. The headband stiffness might be beneficial to me. I find it a bit too loose when I lean my head forward (the headphones start to slide down my head). I might send mine pair in since the swivel mechanism makes a squeaking noise when they rotate (it's not a big deal, but it's slightly annoying).

Ah, okay. I might try the putty mod if I get some putty...on another note, how on earth did my photos get enlarged in your quotation?

^ I don't remember having to extend my old pair like that to fit it in the case.  This is how they came as well, so that's not just me putting them in wrong,

Sorry this took so long.  I was marathoning Twin Peaks with a friend.

I am still not sure if these will actually sound better then the shure srh840. I find the srh840 to be the most dynamic and realistic sounding headphones i have heard.

I think if bcasey listened to the 840 and 940 side by side one of them would be in her rubbish can in no time.

Of all the headphones i have heard owned i had thought that. My sennheiser hd 25 1 ii made me call the srh840 trash until after i got used to the senn hd 25 1 ii. The shure srh840 is just such an amazing headphone. Shure has done such a good job with it.

Also why did you call me a HER? Was that meant to be a joke or do you really think I'm a female?

With your interest in headphones I was ready to ask you to marry me once I saw you referred to as a "her".

I usually let those things slide but with the Internet you can never be certain.

For the millionth time, the soundstage is in the recording, not created by the headphones!!! With any headphone, if the drivers are matched, you will hear it correctly

Of cos its a given, that the soundstage is IN the recording....that where we start from...when we slap on the cd.

And when u have 7 headphones on your table, they all dun sound "alike" playing that same song.
Some would render that "intended soundstage" wider, some narrower, some deeper, some line abreast.

As to the question of which is "more accurate" " more neutral".....
unless u are there in the recording studio, its a guess, albeit educated guess.

I would just try to enjoy/appreciate the particular can with its quirks...  tats how i settle down to this hobby.

I agree with Lorspeaker, the soundstage is in the recording, but if you listen to the same song on 7 different headphones or IEM's they will all sound completely different, so obv. soundstage is in the HP/IEM too? I don't quite follow.

Not to mention soundstage seems to be in the amplifier and DAC section too.

Soundstage in headphones, amps, and DAC are just how good they are at presenting the real soundstage. Basicly flaws in driver matching, op-amp matching, crossfeed, differences in any part of the chain between the L and R channel will present the soundstage differently. So there is only one perfect, but that is near impossible to achieve. All the difference you hear are just different flaws.
