Correction. I just paid a visit to test the 800s and the flagship AKG's. They don't carry customs anymore at all.

That aside, I prefer the 800s but pleasantly surprised by the AKG's. Anyone with comparisons to other universals, customs
or hybrids in the same range?

Rin's preliminary graph is much closer to the truth, except for the usual mids suck-out from diffuse-field EQ (that I consistently fail to hear that way, but that's another story).

Yeah, the price on the site and the exchange rate have been bouncing around a little, and I won't speak for my currency converter (Mac widgets... Ehh).
 
I bought my IE80s from amazon.de, and had a friend in Germany ship them out - I guess if you knew someone in Japan that would be an option.
 
As for me, I may be travelling to Japan sometime next year, so assuming no other new high-end IEM catches my fancy, I'd buy my set from there. I reckon 680 US (correct at the time of posting) is a pretty good price.

I found that the small comply T-500 works with IE800 !
It tames down the highs quite a bit, also the bass is a bit less aggressive too. The overall sound a lot less aggressive and the vocals are simply amazing.

Thing is that midrange dip is much bigger than usual dips, the EX1000 and K3003 are more normal dip. Definitely looks like a flaw, but the results are preliminary.

Revisiting me earlier comments, maybe Tyl's measurements should not be dismissed so quickly. About five days ago I was tempted to post on the possibility that the IE800 evolves significantly with long-term burn-in of hundreds of hours. Specifically, I no longer find that it has especially elevated bass. It has good deep impactful bass but the bass is no longer brain rattling. That was not the case when I first bought it. 
 
It seemed to me that the brightness disappeared even more quickly during burn-in.
 
By this theory, it is possible that Sennheiser sent Inner Fidelity a well-burned-in IE800 for just this reason.

With each passing day that I'm unable to use my IE8s, the temptation grows to get the IE800. But the fitting of my UE700 reminds me why I hate universals. Grrr.

At least I've heard the IE800s now so I have a reference point. Including the k3003
