I'm in the same situation than Sophonax.  HD600 3khz bothers me a bit whereas HD800S brightness does not. in HD6X0 family I prefer the smoother 650.

I on the other hand preferr forward upper mids:D. Talking about upper mids, i noticed that eq this part of FR will make soundstage appear a bit smaller (now i understand comments about HD650 having wider soundstage than HD600).

Yup. the 2-4 khz range induces more forwardness if boosted.

Finally heard this side by side with the original. Sure the edge was taken off, but the difference was really pretty minimal. Surprised Senn are selling them both side by side tbh.

A lot of people have modded HD800 in order to tame it, and HD800S was Sennheiser's answer to that. I guess this is why many HD800S owners out there (not that there are many HD800S owners out there anyway... yet) don't consider modding their HD800S. I wasn't very impressed with the stock HD800S compared to HD800, but found that modding the HD800S can be very rewarding.

So what do you prefer about the 800 over the 800S and what is your 800S modification?

Maybe he wants to mod his HD800 S to put in a 6kHz peak and a bit less bass?

This week I will be adding a Lehmann Black Cube Linear amp between my Chord Hugo and HD800 S.

No idea whether it will offer improvements or not, but thought I would take a punt on it. I would prefer a normal volume control (like with the Lehmann) but it would also have to sound better for me to keep it. Hugo seems really good, but nothing to compare it to.

Anyone else have any experience with the above set up? Tried it around 18 months ago with the HD800, but can't really remember the outcome, and was with the older headphone, obviously.

I'm entirely at a loss over what would need modification on these.

Some people do mods for the sake of it.

Not a nice remark at all!

I for one do the mods because I expect improvements. I haven't heard the HD 800 S yet, but stated from the start that I would do the same damping mod with it as with the classic model. Thinking the Helmholtz resonator be a guarantee for acoustic perfection is too short-sighted. There's still the same reflective surfaces within the housings. The inner reflections caused by them may not sound too irritating, maybe even make for a pleasing smoothness and sparkle, but they're bad for transient response and accuracy. BTW: The resonator itself even represents an additional source of reflections.

I wasn't referring to mod scene in general.. FWIW, even some of the most prominent modders admit that.
