Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Maybe "recessed" wasn't the right word. They just weren't as clear as I'd have liked them to be. When i compare them to other sets they missed the odd detail that songs i knew well should have. Don't get me wrong though, they also picked up on details i hadn't heard before which was nice. As someone says though, maybe i'm after a brighter pair as they are very smooth sounding. Or they just need a more powerful amp than the GO1000? I wasn't after analytical though.

PS... Although it's doubtful they were defective, I did hear some interference/static noise on certain tracks. e.g. Lorde - Royals with the low bass rumble there was a kind of popping/clicking. Happened on a few other tracks.

I have that lorde album in flac, not sure what popping/clicking sound you are talking about, are you sure it isn't your dac or amp? I used to have a dac that popped and clicked using optical from the computer.

The treble elevates maybe one or two dB in some spots with the coin mod. I have a big sensitivity to treble and it took a week or two to get used to. Removing the spider just gets rid of glare and allows a very nice smoothness, despite the improved clarity. It's a breath taking affair :)

Also don't hear any clicks from Lorde - Royals on flac or vinyl. Check your file for clipping maybe?

I just posted (in a different thread) about listening to the HD600s, the HD650s, and the HD800s in one comparative listening session last week.  I described the HD650s as "veiled, congested, and foggy."  (Not to quote myself -- sorry -- but I'm looking for the right terminology as you are.)

Admittedly, this was on one particular chamber music recording -- to which I had limited myself on purpose.  And I may well prefer the HD650s on much different music.  All that said, I don't think that this "not as clear" quality is unique to your hearing.

When you remove the spider it opens up the vent. It was nerve wrecking for me to worry about dust getting into the vent in the back it seems difficult to clean the dust out once it gets in.

Look at the 3rd picture the foam fits perfectly behind the grill. Btw disregard the 1st pic I put the coin hole mod back in.

Oh I see, I didn't think you meant the entire grill. Any perceived sonic changes?

1-2 dB shouldn't bother me. At least the coin mod is super cheap to undo if I don't like it. The spider grill is not.

Ordering process is simple. Contact them, they'll invoice you w/ pay-pal, pay & they ship dhl which takes about 5-7 days.

so you just email them telling them you want to buy "name of item" and they'll send you a link to their payment method?
what about if something goes wrong with the unit? they are in china and sending faulty units back to might be a hassle.

@harry501501, the bit about a defective HD-650 was just me hoping that you ruled it out.  As for a more powerful amp, I don't think its just power output but synergy between the headphone and amp, which is why I think many like the BH Crack with either of the HD-6XX headphones and even the HD-800 and T1.  The BH Crack doesn't go as well with the HD-800S since it gets to mushy sounding to me.

@Jim Hodgson, saw your post in the HD-600 thread, hope you get to try the HD-650 and HD-800 on a decent OTL amp, that is when these two headphones can show what they are capable of.  While I think the HD-600 is good, it was the highs that were sometimes harsh / grainy on some track that the HD-650/800 rendered much better.  But its still a personal preference so if you find the HD-650 "veiled" then its probably not your preference.

Got my pair in, wow these absolutely destroy the HE-400 in everything except for EDM/Trap. Hip hop sounds so much better because of the mids, really anything with male vocals. Unsure whether to sell the HE-400 or to keep them strictly for bassier songs without male vocals (quite specific...)

I agree they sound really good for hip hop, with a warm tube in my vali 2 they hit those low notes really strong.

I'll second Impact Audio Cables on Etsy.  https://www.etsy.com/shop/ImpactAudioCables

I picked up a replacement HD650 cable with a right-angle 1/4" plug.  Cable is gorgeous and really well made.

Actually, this is my cable:

I would keep them unless you need the funds, I've kept my HE-400, every once in a while I want to have that bass.

If you think your HD-650 sounds good now, try them on a decent OTL amp like a BH Crack, WA3 (upgraded tubes), Valhalla2 or the Elise.

Nice cables, can I ask why you went with a right angle 1/4"?
