Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I was wanting to get some HD600/HD650 grills for my HD580. Sennheiser US looks like it no longer does telephone calls. I opened a ticket asking if they had a pair of these grills for sale. Here is what I got as a response. Make of it what you will...

Good Day,

Thank you for contacting the Sennheiser Customer Service team.

The HD650 are discontinued and we no longer carry these in our warehouse or have parts available.

Hopefully this isn't accurate, especially about parts availability. (Imagine no new earpads!)

If the HD 650 is really discontinued, why are they showing for sale on the US and the UK Sennheiser websites?

Brainwavz Audio lists Sweden as one of their EU Destination Countries.

Are these pads just a straight swap or is surgery involved?

Speculating - discontinued manufacturing, continuing to sell existing stock.

I have no more information than what was sent to me in the email I posted. I have no idea if it is accurate. I hope it is mistaken.

You will either have to cut the plastic rings out of your stock pads or buy some cheap stock replacements from ebay that have the plastic ring, then cut that out and put inside the brainwavz.

Thanks. Can they be found anywhere except on Amazon? Amazon does not ship to Sweden...

If you put a headphone output directly on the line out of the DAC, that is what you get with a Chord DAC. There is no amplifier in it.

Other DAC's like the Auralic Vega are even louder than the Chord Hugo for example if you put the volume up (atleast the unit that I tried seemed to be able to deliver more power than the Hugo).

The Dave, Hugo and Mojo are all DAC/amps. They're not pure DACs, they're designed to also be used with headphones (hence the headphone outputs). Most true, stand-alone DACs are gonna have an output impedance way higher than you want for a lot of headphones, and this can absolutely affect the way the headphones sound poorly, so the idea that this is the most pure way to listen is nonsense. There's a reason so many DAC are designed from the ground up to be used with a separate amplifier

+1. DACs do a better job also, when completely separated from amplification circuitry inside. Costlier but.....

Ah, that sounds likely. The good news is that the chance for that happen from Brainwavz is very small. I've received more than 20 parcels from them and haven't got pinged a single time.
