SHURE make some great IEM's but awful full size phones. 1540 was a step in the right direction and I like the 840 as a decent entry level headphone.

Shure 1840: Crap

HD650: Pretty good

LCD2: Awesome

End of story.

I did keep the 1440 though, I like its neutrality. (And I love the Alcantara pads)

I could not get rid of the 1840 fast enough. Just awful to my ears.

interesting how we all hear differently, I kept the 1840 and sold the 1440, but I do think they are over priced.  If I didn't get the BH Crack I think I would have also sold the HD650 over the 1840 which on my bedroom HT receiver sounds a lot better than either HD650 or HD600.  Only problem with the 1840 is you can't play it at high volume levels (85dB+) since it starts to distort a bit but since I usually only listen at 58-65dB with them its not an issue.

We are all different and hear different, I can't stand any IEM, they just sound weird, and the 840 was the $10 sounding headphone to me

That is not true. There are things the Shure SRH 1840 does better than the HD 650 (but some things are also worse like the grainy treble on the Shure SRH 1840). So to me the Shure SRH 1840, HD 600 and HD 650 are in the same ball park of headphones.

If the Shure SRH 1840 did not have that much grain in the treble region (the grain is the biggest weakness of the Shure SRH1840) and measured a bit better in the THD, then the Sennheiser HD 800 would have had big problems at $1000.

While I agree with some of the points he's talking about bass roll off being a fail when it's a byproduct of a dynamic driver just like compression and impact is an issue for many modern planars. It's only within the last few years bass extension on dynamics has been achievable and the roll off still exist.

The Senns really shine with that voltage. I've always hated full sized SHURES apart from two. The 840 just had am musical sound for me.

I've tried for many years to find a headphone that can outperform the HD650 in all areas and it's never happening. Sure there's some headphone that resolve better like the Utopia, LCD-4  and the Elear while similar in performance is a bit higher res than the HD650 but the HD650 really starts to close the gap on higher gear.

I would take a 650 and Zana Deux over a lot of headphones.

You lump them together like they all have the same signature, the LCD-4, HD650 and the Utopia sound nothing alike and apppeal to different ears. Apples and oranges.

The Elear should be priced lower then the 650, awesome external build, but horrible driver(build wise not sound) that failed on me twice (at moderate volumes)before I gave up on them. The have the most "650 like sound" to my ears, but they did not scale like the 650. They would be a better comparison despite costing 3 times as much.

i love my 650s. just wanted to add here that if you don't put brainwaves angled sheep skin pads on them your doing headphones wrong.

my mod:
remove old pads and foam
install brainwaves angled sheep skin pads

done

and.. the sound is phenomenal. the comfort is phenomenal

How does this effect the sound? What does it make better and what does it make worse?

why are we doing a doing the headphone wrong with the stock pads?  Pad rolling with the HD650 has never been discussed much, if at all, and a few on the HD600 thread tried alternate pads and most have said stick with the stock pads since any pad rolling affects the sound in a negative way.  But would still like to hear your reasons to the changes in the sound with the angled sheep skin pads

Currently on Amazon's lightning deal for $300 if anybody is interested:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00018MSNI?tag=slickdeals&ascsubtag=d8c61aea011211e78171fa68b6269a330INT&selectObb=deal

(Sorry, copied and pasted from Slickdeals and don't know how to remove the referral link)

Decent deal.  Thanks for posting.  But really, they should be $200 like the Massdrop 6XX. I wonder how much Sennheiser is hurting their 650 sales now by releasing the 6XX.  Even if they're currently not available, I'm sure tons of people are holding out on buying the 650 in hopes of another upcoming 6XX drop.
