Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread
Dec 16, 2014 at 11:39 AM Post #21,061 of 46,554
Lastly, while the HD650 continues to enjoy a cachet as a premium product, the marketplace for headphones in the HD650's range has become much more crowded. Which is due to the wild profit margins of headphones. I'm not sure how sustainable it is in the long term for Sennheiser to keep a heavy hand on their MSRP of $500.

Prestige, reputation, exclusivity?  While the market is starting to get crowded, newer headphones can be roll of the dice.  Sennheiser is an established brand and identity.  People are more certain with what they will get, so there are more intrinsic values to be considered?

I know Music Direct has carried the 650 since day one (when I bought my first pair) and has never charged full price.  Their discount isn't as steep as amazon though.

It will be interesting to see if the price stays low. That could make way for the HD 700 dropping and a new HD 750 entering the market. That's what I'd do.

It would be nice to see something in the top tier of Sennheiser's range with the sound signature of an HD650 sometime soon. As amazing as the HD650 is, its design is aging and it would probably benefit the company to introduce a replacement soon.

What part of the 650 is aging for you?

It seems like the HD700 was the attempt, but many complain that it still lacks the attributes that make the HD650 special

That's an understatement.  The 700 is an opposite to the 650 with a hot treble and somewhat thin sound.

I just ordered a 650 last night from bhvideophoto for $313.99 flat. At the time i thought it was a good deal but I'm not so sure anymore. I wanted them because I thought they were a big step up from my 598s, but after looking at some reviews, many say that the 650 is boring and the 598 is more engaging. I use my 598 with gaming and I love the soundstage it produces, I wish it had more bass but it's still nice and tight. Ive also heard the 650 has a smaller soundstage. I may just return the item immedietly without opening it to avoid the restocking fee :frowning2:

Update: I plan on using them with a Cayin C5 portable amp.

Go into listening to any headphone with an open mind. Sound quality and what a person looks for is going to be different for everyone.

I've not owned the 598.

Think I came across the similar 'criticisms' of the HD650 when I was perusing amazon a few years ago. I didn't have much interest in headphones then, and the price at the time of around £370 put me off.

Having purchased them and owned them, I have to say those reviews saying that the HD650 being 'boring' is an accurate description, albeit a slightly clumsy one. It doesn't have exciting emphasised bass or treble. It sounds pretty even to me, and hence 'boring' or understated. Understated sound gives you flexibility in listening to any genre of music, which can't be said of the W1000X/W5000.  It's not hyper detailed like the T1 but it is plenty detailed. This smooth sound also gives long term listening comfort, and longevity in appreciating music and the gear, as opposed to being initially wowed, and then tiring of the sound signature.

Some will find the HD650 boring and dislike it. Sometimes, even I find it stuffy, lacks the openness or airy sound that I desire. But then those same ears can't get enough of its tone during a long night listening session. So contrary to what many in this forum state, I do not trust my ears. I therefore like to give any headphones the time to adjust, and each find their place.

TL;DR: I don't see 'boring' as a criticism.

I've not used the C5, but I find the HD650 are pretty easy to power. I use it with the microstreamer when I'm on the laptop, and they sound almost identical to my desktop rig.

IMO and YMMV as always

edit: typo

+1 Big Time !  Bought the HD700 a year and a half ago and realized within a short time span that I had made an expensive mistake.  I've said this before & will keep saying it : IMHO with a proper amp & source the HD650 is an incredible HP.  For example, right now I'm listening to Steely Dan's SACD "Gaucho" with my GS-1 amp & Teac CD/SACD 2000.  I started off with the T1 listening to the first song "Babylon sisters" & a minute into the song I stopped it, switched to the HD650, restarted the song & the sound was perfect.  Non fatiguing, lush, detailed and transient which is what it excels at ie. compared to the T1.

I was just wanting to hear the HD 650 brought up to date. Perhaps using the same chassis as the HD 700 / HD 800. I read that that chassis is very comfortable. Something with the same subdued sound signature but, well, more.
