I wouldn't even call the HD650 detailed. You could blame my amp but that's my subjective opinions and I dislike the HD650's laid back (veiled) and dark (muddy) sound signature.

Are you sure you're not confusing the sound signature? The HD650 rolls off 15+khz, but if you give 15+khz an EQ boost to be a bit more neutral, it sounded notably more detailed than my DT880.

I don't use EQ and will never use it. Makes everything sound artificial to my ears. Our ears are very different ac500: remember the SRH940?

Once again I'm realizing the SRH940 is an amazing headphone. I can't tell until I have more time to compare, but I'm finding the DT880/600 to be inferior in treble to the HD650, which I find inferior in treble to the SRH940.

I think there are two sides to the SRH940 hype currently. There is the (single) person claiming they compare to an HD800, and a ton of people saying the SRH940 sound amazing above their price point. The SRH940 by no means compares to an HD800, not even close (although I haven't listened extensively). But to be fair, IMO, they are way better than DT880s and HD650s in upper mids, treble, and overall detail.
 
My problem now is that my SRH940s being too small for my head... well... there's nothing I can do about that

I have the Audio-gd NFB-12, basically same model with the digital filters.  Decent DAC and amp for the money.  Slightly warm signature that can be changed by using the filters.  Pairs quite nicely with the HD600s.  Worth considering.

After giving the DT880 more listening time and comparing directly, I only found the SRH940 superior in upper treble 15+khz. Everything else I found the DT880 better at (mids, lows). I still think the HD650 is better than the DT880 all-around though.

imo the HD600 and HD650 is all based on preference. Having heard them both I would choose the HD600 but I know other who would go the other way.
 
As for the price range I have yet to hear any headphone that beats the HD600 easily without any kind of modification.

Since I'm bored, I'd give the HD-600 a 7.75/10 for sound quality. It's sound didn't knock my socks off and instead makes me kind of fall asleep. Now, this isn't a bad thing at all.
I remember comparing the HD-650 and HD-600 side by side and the HD-600 matched my preferences a lot more and felt more airy and clear. HD-650 with ANY amps/cable was too dark for me.
 
I did however feel that the HD-650 did better for female vocals than the HD-600. When I got my HD-650 I ended up selling my ATH-AD2000 since it was a good alternative.
The HD-650 (like the K702) I have a love/hate thing for.
 
My alternative to the HD-600 was the K601, which is closer to my preferences. I miss the HD-600, but the HD-598 gets me by and it's somewhat similar.
Honestly, I'm not usually a fan of very warm headphones so maybe that's why I didn't love the HD-650.
 
BTW I do think there's a lot of things the 650 does better than the HD-600. I think it's a little less grainy, but to compare the difference it's a bit difficult and requires specific music.
Not enough of a difference for me to care. MY HD-650 did feel like it had a more closed in soundstage than the HD-600 and maybe that's why it sounded as if it had more forward mids.
This seems to go against what everyone else says...
 
Strangely enough I didn't like the HD-650 until I bought a new amp and upgraded from the Asgard. Weird Huh? Seems that's happened way too much.
 
BTW does anyone know of any other headphones that sound like a mix between an HD-600 and a K702. The only thing that comes to mind is the ATH-AD2000 and the K601 maybe..wish there was more.
How about the W1000x? Probably not.

Isn't most Audio-GD gear tuned around the HD600's? They always seem to match really well with them. I know my Audio-GD ROC (discontinued balanced amp) sounds great with my HD600. It drives them with absolute ease and the sound is so open. Too bad they discontinued it, as well as the SA variation. Great amps.
 
Also the NFB12.1 is a great amp/DAC for the money. Easily bests Little-Dots OTL offerings. It also have more than enough voltage and power for the HD600.

It's actually got to the point where I'm second guessing on whether to spend more at the moment on dac/amp (was considering Bifrost/Valhalla combo).  The more I listen to the NFB-12, the more I realise what a great value combo it  aleeady is.  For the $700 or so to upgrade, I could probably think about something in the new HD700 class instead .......
 
That could be a nice combo.
